USB and Ethernet Connections

Hello,
Do you need a USB Cord and an Ethernet Cord plugged into a DSL router @ the same time. I disconnected the USB and then could not get the Broadband connection again. Should I have to have a USB and an Ethernet plugged into the same router. On different port hookups on the back of the routr of course. Please help!
