Quake Wars shots on 8800

scroll down a bit and u will see it

What does id's new team-based combat shooter look like at high res with 4X AA and all the eye candy turned up? A little like this...

There's no question about it, the game gives BattleField 2 and 2142 a run for their money. The graphics are a far cry (no pun intended) from BF 2142 and the color palette alone makes things look a lot more realistic and well... colorful. Carmack's new MegaTexture technology really shines in the outdoor environments, as you can see in these shots. Also, we should note, these captures were taken at 2560X1600 res with 4X AA and 16X aniso filtering turned on. We shrank down the full-sized shots to 1024 res here, just so they fit on the average-sized screen for our readers. However, at full HD res, the game was completely playable on a single GeForce 8800 GTX graphics card and a Core 2 E6750 dual core processor.

If you haven't downloaded the demo yet, go now. It's tons of "get-some" fun.

I've been messing around with the demo and am impressed with the game. I don't think it is any kind of graphical breakthrough but I'm impressed because it plays so well on my older systems.

I've messed around here on my local network and the game looks good on these systems:
e6600/8800gtx 2 gig ram
opty175/850xt 2 gig ram
p4 2.6/6800gt 1 gig ram

Now just to be able to play it online without punkbuster crashing the display driver under Vista.

WHOAH, I just played QW last night, and if this is the newish crop of games, EVERYONE on Toms isn't going to have to rush upgrades very much anymore, we are def. in a new era of console gaming holding everything back. You want to buy an 8800GTS 640? Grab one, it'll last you till the last xBox 360 hits the dumpster.

I thought this game would make my ageing system crawl on max @ 1440x900, at 8x AA it was buttery smooth, VERY playable @ 16x AA.

Then I played the Bioshock demo, maxxed completely, and it was smooth as well with nVidia beta drivers. I already had the AMD Dual Core timing fix installed a long time ago from advice off you guys at Toms.

So yes, that whole console / PC debate died with the 2900/8800 series, PC all the way now.

PC generally gets the 360 games, and PS3 is loosing exclusives to the 360 :)

AND you have a useful machine in your house, games on PC fall to 30$ in 3 months (I bought Oblivion for 30$ and saw it on PS3 for 70!!!) Supreme Commander: 30$, alot of the newer Splinter Cells are 19$!!!

AND we get to use the 360 controller!!! LOL!!!!

So yes, you want a 2900 or an 8800GTS 640??? GRAB it, they will last a LONG time. Take a closer look at the 2900 1GB or the GTX IMHO at this point, I thought 9x was going to be killer, but I guess it would be overkill=doubtful release. I am seeing 640's for $379 now, and Evga has the stepup anyway. And they are VERY OCable. I am running mine @ 675 core / 2200 ram if I need it, temps stay under 75C. My "safe" OC is 640/1924, giving me 8338 3DMarks06.

So, you guys getting over 10,000 3DMarks wondering about Crysis? I think you'll be VERY happy.

Why are you taking shots at the Xbox360 and PS3? Mad that Halo 3 and MGS4 aren't coming out on the PC? ;)

Heyyou27 - You are correct about MGS4 sir, Halo 3 though, yuck, that game is for babies.

And yes, I am sour AND bitter that consoles are such a bottleneck for new games. Who woulda thunk it? :(

Heyyou27 - you really hurt me with that MGS4 comment. I usually have a VERY thick skin, but it is early in the morning. What's that?? (tastes coffee) my coffee doesn't taste so great after that one, there seems... to be a bitter taste in my mouth...

Heading back to bed now... *grumble* was supposed to be a NICE day off...

(maybe the PS3 would go nice as a Blu-Ray player in the end when I get an HDTV at one point...) :)

Heh, it was merely a joke. I also tend to agree about Halo, but it's bound to have some decent multiplayer and it's hard to ignore the hype even if it is just a copy of Tribes. I need to get my hands on a PS3, and then I'll own all 3 of the new consoles. I still prefer to play games on my PC; it doesn't get much better than Bioshock, Oblivion, or Quake Wars on an 8800GTX. :D

What are you lot talking about, this is hurting my head now. The only reason Quake Wars works well on PC’s is because John Carmack is an excellent games programmer. Who remembers when DOOM3 was released, didn’t they get that game to run on a TNT2?

How can consoles be holding progress back, sure they are holding a few games back but they are not holding back the rate at which games for the PC are evolving. It will soon be the case again as it always has been that the PC will pull so far away from the consoles that developers will have no choice but to make PC only titles again. I guess it’s only an opportunist move at the moment while the performance levels are similar developers are bringing things out on both formats.

Oh by the way I would place money on Halo3 and MGS4 being released for the PC just like all the versions before hand.
