You mean socket am2? X2 simply means the CPU is a dual core. AMD has claimed that K10 will be supported by socket am2 motherboards.

Don't worry, ryan. The desktop version of Barcelona will be AM2 compatible. As a matter of fact, Asus just released a list on their website of AM2 boards that have updated BIOSs to accomodate Phenom when it comes out (which basically included all of their current AM2 boards). You'll be able to put a new AMD quad core in your AM2 board. :D

It is too far from being out. I think they want to launch it in Q1 of 2008. My guess is that it will be competitively prices with Intel quads. I wouldn't mind having more choices in the quad core market.

AM2 Barcelona just won't benefit from power savings and DDR3 I think, so no big deal to gamers...

but they will benefit from the four cores. For games such as Crysis...

AMD will release dual and quad core flavors, and folks have suggested as early as November for release of the quad core, but that remains to be seen. I've seen no indication whatsoever of Phenom pricing, but I would bet that with Intel selling the Q6600 for ~$266, AMD will release a desktop quad core with comparable performance for equal or less scratch.

Here's the link to the list of AM2 boards that support Phenom, but as far as I could tell, 1001 was the newest BIOS for the M2N-E. Either that BIOS supports Phenom, or another will be released in the next few days. I'd keep your eyes peeled to make sure.
