So I'm sure I already know the answer to this, but thought I'd pose the question to the hardware gurus:

Recently bought a new dell inspiron, and it came with a 128mb 830gs graphics card. I currently have a 512mb 7900GT KO graphics card. The 7900GTKO will smoke the 8300gs in all ways, correct? So I'm okay just taking the darn thing out and selling it?

Thanks. :)

There's no comparison between the 8300GS and the 7900GT. The 7900GT will smoke it and then some. Just make sure the PSU on your Dell is enough to power it.

It's an oem that they represent as being better than it is. Just like the 7300LE.

Yeah I have a 500w enermax I've been running my 7900GT on in my old(er) gateway that I'm just going to switch into my dell, I think. I can't argue when a guy offers me his brand new 2.0ghz core2duo with 1gb ddr2 and a dvd burner for 400 bucks, because it "wasn't what I meant to order." What an idiot. :)

Yeah, too bad the ladder don't help much with more recent games. It's almost misleading and should only be used for older games.

My buddy just replaced his SLi'd 7800GTXs with a single 8800 Ultra because Bioshock looked like crap and was slow at 1680 and higher resolutions.

The Ultra made 1920x1200 playable with everything turned on in game. As a side note, we then changed his 4800+ for a E6850 and now 1920 flies.

The charts are fine for any of the games in there, if you are comparing older cards (X1xx0/7xx0 or lower), because newer drivers are not being optimized specifically for them any longer, so they will unlikely make a big difference. For HD2x00 and 8x00 cards, the drivers used are too old to correctly compare.

As far as the manufacturers are concerned, the cards lifespan is as long as it remains current gen. Not sure about nvidias drivers, but if you read the release notes for the catalysts, the performance increases always relate to recently released hardware. This doesn't mean there isn't a performance increase across the board, it just tends to suggest they only optimize them properly for the newer cards.
