Im sure this has been asked a million times before, but Currently I have a AMD 4000+ Single core san-diego chip. 2.4GHZ. 1Gb or cossair ddr 3200 ram, ati Radeon x850 Pro Modded to an 850 XTPE. I have a Koolance water cooling case with the CPU and VPU water cooled. no OCing yet.

here are the Chips that work with My Motherboard that Im considering Purchasing

was Looking At the opteron 170, unless the 175/180 somehow magicaly works on my Mobo. Price limit 150.00 dollars. whats the best CPU upgrade. mainly for gaming. thanks

The Opteron 170 has 1Mb L2 Cache per Core and is statistically the highest 939 overclocker, frequently reaching 3.0 Ghz, because it is high bin for servers. I had one prior to my Intel rig, and it was absolutely outstanding. It was the best AMD rig I evder owned, and I really hated to eBay the parts. The X2 4200 has only 512 Kb Cache per Core and is desktop binning, so it won't overclock as well as the Opty.

Hope this helps,

Comp :sol:

Get the Opty! They're good OC'ing chips that can still compete with AMD's best. Alternatively, an FX-60 is also great, but more expensive.

BTW: The list does show that the Opty 175 and 180 do work with your board, its just that the list is set up strangely. (Shown directly below Opty X2 models on chart)

It shows the opty 175 and 180 but on the Righthand side, it says SINCE bios VERSION = N/A

so it may magically work. on my Bios. but the 170 does work.

Grab a 170, you will be able to skip a whole upgrade cycle and hop back in at 8 or 16 cores at the slow rate games are being released. With an 8800 and an Opty dual core, you're going to be happy for a long time. If you are patient, the 165 is also a great overclocker. People are getting 2.6 Ghz with a stock fan (the stock fan has heatpipes, you'll love it, REEKS of quality the chip and the HSF). I could only go to 2.25 GHz because my ram is value bin. A more experienced person would be able to bring my comp probably up to 2.4 with my Crucial Rend (they are etched from the same wafer though, side by side!!).

You can get almost any x2 up to 2.4- 2.6 ghz with little effort depending on your MB and RAM. My MB limited my 3800x2 to 2.4 ghz...you don't need to spend the extra $ on an OPTY!

My Opty 170 Does very well on stock voltage until above 2.7 Ghz. Above that point I have to raise voltage, and temps rise quickly. Still though, a 35% OC isn't bad at all, and my temps are super low.

Get an Opteron 180 or 185. I have a 185. They overclock between 2.9 and 3.1ghz clean. I have my at 2925mhz with Cool'n'Quiet enabled and it will do 3001mhz on a 250mhz HTbus and x12 multiplier. If Newegg.com still has them get the highest level Opty you can afford. I got my 185 for $160.
