8800 gts 320mb SLI vs 640 mb
Hi, im new to this site and i have a question, i was wondering if 2 8800 gts 320mb cards in SLI would be better than the 640 mb. I know that the 2 320 mb Sli cards would still only have 320mb it doesnt double, but my resolution is 1680 x 1050 widscreen so i wanted to know if the 2 320's would work better than the 640 at that resolution, which would be a better decision?
well i already have 1 320 and i have a few more days in my step up program, because i have EVGA, and i dont have the money for a gtx so i was going to step-up to a 640 but i wanted to know if 2 320's would be better plus a gtx dousnt fit in my case, my hard drive bays would get in the way and i dont want to remove them.
It is up for grabs... in some games 2x 320mb ones will be better due to having more raw computing power... but the 640mb will support more textures (effectively having better textures = better graphics).
If you feel your 320mb in inadequate for the games you play or plan on playing, then step up... otherwise, no point and just be content... there will always be better hardware out there!
If you list the games you intend to play or are playing and what you feel inadequate in the current 320mb, then I'm sure people can give you a more definitive Yes or No to upgrading.
a SINGLE 8800gts 320 is equal to a 8800gts 640 in most games in resolutions under 1600x1200 , so 2x will be faster , however in games like OBLIVION , DARK MESSIAH , GRAW1 , GRAW2 , which need a lot of VRAM a 8800GTS 640 will be better ,
U already have a GTS ? cant u play games @ good settings ? (a 8800gts 320 will run games fine on very good settings on 1680x1050 quality )
8800GTS 640 wont make a performance boost for u , 2x8800gts 320 wont make performance boost for u , if u really arent satisfied with your GTS, then wait and get a 8800GTX later ,

All this info would have been helpful in your original post.
I have no problems running anything with a 320 at 1680x1050.
A technicality: How much would the step-up to a GTX cost you? More than the $300 you'd spend on a second 320?
I'm just curious.
well, the game i am looking to upgrade for the most is crysis, i played the MP beta and my computer runs the game fine at 1680 x 1050 on all medium, but once i put texture quality up to high it starts to slow down, so im guessing the 640 would be the better decision but im not sure thats why i asked. maybe its just the beta idk im hoping but this is the only game im really upgrading for cause its really the only game that tests my computer :P
At those resolutions you need 640 MB to run a game like that.
I run 2 8800 gts's 320 in sli (evga superclocked) at 1280x1024 and can attest that at my resolution games like bioshock and doom3 run great...but I will not upgrade my monitor due to the lack of texture memory at higher resolutions like yours...
You could of course try this...which works...
Run games at a lower res, and use AA to compensate, you will get better frame rates, and can run the cards in SLI for the computing power which one 8800gts640 can not compete with.
Try this lower res and report your frame rate changes with fraps and you will have a good answer...as long as the game still looks good!
I did this with several games and it is great (previous to my second 8800 gts 320SC).
I hope this helps.
