Is DX10 worth it?

Hello!

Here's the deal, I have Vista and I want to upgrade from intergrated graphics but I am only willing to spend $100-$150 max.
I was thinking about getting this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150230 8600 GT, the performence increase from the gt to the gts is not enough to justify the extra $30-$50 and the 8800's are still too pricey for me. I have heard that the 8600 gt is not powerful enough to handle any of the newest DX10 games, is that true? I would like to be able to play the newest games at about 1280X1024 res with 4xAA and 8xAF with a minimum of 20 fps. Is DX10 worth it or should I just get a DX9 card? I am willing to sacrifice some AA for more fps's. What about ATI?

Imo, not yet worth it unless you are going high end. And then you'd rock with DX9 anyway.

why would you get a dx9 card instead of a dx10?

go ahead and get the dx10 card if you are going to spend the money anyway unless you are planning to do something else with it.

if you spent the money to get a dx10 card then you can use the dx10 features on future games, but you couldn't on a dx9 card.

so, i see no reason of not going to dx10.

Low-end directx10 cards are useless for directx10. There is a little promise with pure directx10 games, but still require much higher-end cards to run them (like the 8800 GTS or better). You're best bet for that price might be the Radeon X1950 Pro, That will at least play most directx9 games fine.

Cheaper, faster card at $99 with no rebates to deal with. I don't consider the midrange DX10 cards as being future proof. So far they are terrible in DX10. Check out their findings: http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/video/display/directx10-games.html

So I think what everyone is saying is that if you are wanting DX10 get a highend card, but if you are only willing to pay $100-$150 get a DX9 card like the Radeon X1900GT?

Add $15.00 and get this flavor at least. It's alright. I have one now (upgrading by the end of the year).

there are some vids already out that compare the two. Google it and see for yourself if the difference is worth the money. keeping in mind that there is no point getting a 8600GT to run games in DX10 maxed out....cause i doubt the framerate will be very fluid, so youd really be better off with a high end dx9 card in that case. However if you think DX10 is worth it by the looks of things...then personally i wouldnt go below the 8800/2900 (these then double up as the top end dx9 cards aswell).

Well...I'm without benchmarks here (so, my advice isn't worth too much), but the DDR4 version of the HD 2600XT is about the level of the X1950PRO (or GT, depending on benchmark).

At least, that's what the ORB project library for 3DMark06 says.

That's a fine choice for 1280x1024 gaming, at least DX9-wise. Don't know about DX10, but the card can do it.

looks like for the money you want to spend you should go with your original choice
but remember there is no way in hell that you are going to play recent dx10 games at max settigns. probably medium
as for future dx10, i think that we will see some amazing things come out of the technology in the months and years to come. just think Crysis will be out in november which utilizes dx10

two years is along time to develop gaming technology that would utilize dx10 more efficiently. just look how far we have come in the last 2 years, It's unbelievable.

well if your system is "usable" just stick with it and see which cards do what on crysis..and who knows...if your lucky enough there may be another card out then or the prices may have fallen.

I am not in this just for crysis, I just wanted to know will the price drop on the 8600 gt. I am willing to wait till November, but is it worth the wait? Will it drop enough in price in a month? does anyone have any idea?
I heard that Nvidia is coming out with a new 8000 series card, is that one going to be under $200?

Actually a 2900PRO card is rumoured to be released in the next month or so. Will be $250ish and might be worth waiting for

keep with the 8600gts, though
on overall frames/second on toms vga charts the 8600gts wins by 165frames. and it's priced basically in the same category as an 8600gt

See my other post, I would wait... DX10 is definitely NOT worth it and high end hardware seems to be very lacking for any DX10 title (ATI or nVidia).
