e2180 Stable OC on GA P35C DS3R at 3.4GHz

Just thought I'd make a contribution and post the results of my recent OC.

By reducing the multiplier to 9...I was able to increase the RAM to 950 MHz at +0.2 v ( = 2.1v)

The FSB is runing at 378 MHz.

Voltages are CPU (Stock was 1.25v): 1.475v (1.445 with droop)
FSB: +0.2
MCH: +0.2

Using Antec P180 Case: Stock fans at medium settings and Arctic Cooler Pro 7.....with stock paste (ie. brand new)

Currently getting 3.4 at a max temp of 60 deg C whilst running Orthos.

Achieving SuperPi 1M: 18 secs / 2M: 44secs
PC Mark 05 CPU: 8660 / MEM: 6760
SiSoft Sandra Proc Arith D: 31,558...W: 21,833
Multi-core Efficy: 7267
Inter-core Latency: 27 ns
Mem Latency: 89 ns
HotCPU Benchmark: 15,900

3D Mark 05: 1680x1050 no AA/AF : Graphics: 15,500 CPU: 12,000
4 AA / 8 AF: Graphics: 10,658 CPU: 11,200

3D Mark 06: 1680x 1050 no AA/AF: Graphics: 10,150 CPU: 2900 SM2: 4537
4 AA / 8 AF: Graphics: 6,138 CPU: 2877 SM2: 2596


F.E.A.R Built-in Benchmark: 1680x 1050 4AA/8AF All Max - no soft Shadows Min: 42/ Mean 75 / Max: 135 (no Vert Sych !)

I have seen other 2180's overclocked all the way to 3.6, but that is at the expenses of 1.5 volts to the cpu along with the max. +0.3v to the RAM,FSB and MCH Northbridge...with temperatures on air at over 70deg.

Personally, I'd like my system to last more than a few months and value a reasonable balance of performance, heat, power consumption and stability; and of vourse...longevity !!!

400x8 = 3.2 or x9 = 3.6. Easily done with a bit more vCore. That board should do that at nearly stock volts on the NB. My Blood Iron does. Memory can then be run 1:1 at stock settings and stock voltage.

I did mine at 3 ghz, (300x10). All i wanted out of this chip was it to run at 3 ghz, stable, and it does that fine. Im using 1.39V according to cpu-z, and its been stable, no reboots, etc. What an awesome purchase for 89 bucks

Yes, I think mine is a "good one" ? CPU clearly shows it at 1.25.

As for pushing it to 3.6...with more voltage...as I said...I don't want to run it to the maximum...I'd rather keep some headroom and maximise stability in the long term.

When all said and done, another 200mhz won't make much differnece to framerates - which ultimately is all I'm bothered about.

As for running 1:1 RAM, I doubt it would be significantly better than 4:5.

Also, the guy who did a massive amount of tests with the e2180 on various m/boards at different o/c settings, reckoned that the optimum FSB was 350-360, with performance tailing off towards 400.

and surely, running RAM at 950 Mhz beats running it at stock 800 ? !!!

CPU-Z I believe always reads slightly under BIOS settings. For example 1.5V BIOS = 1.475 in CPU-Z At least I've seen in many screenshots the difference between BIOS and CPU-Z.

In the end I want to hit 3.4Ghz, I just bought a nice Centurion 5 case with 80mm intake and 120mm exaust . The exaust will be in a double pull setup with the fan on my cooler master TX2 HSF. Also I got a very nice vga cooler for my 8800GT for $18. I think its the accellero S2. Once the cavarly comes in I let you guys know what happens at what temps. Also if I get the rebate back I only spent about $23 on the aftermarket cooling. Including the VGA and CPU coolers.

Well actually both CPUz and the Gigabyte monitor that comes with the board - both state the Vuid at 1.25v...as I say, I clearly got lucky with the chip...!

It would likely go to 3.6/3.7, so leaving it at 3.4 means built in headroom, less than max voltage = good temps (never exceed 62deg on Orthos in a warm room, and therefore long life and stability.

Not bad for a £600 PC...especially when the newest (fastest available) processor does SuperPi 1M in 15 secs vs mine at 18 secs...but that processor costs more than my entire PC !
