Putting a fan from a Dell machine onto a new mobo

I've got a fan called Nidec Betav, TA450DC:

It came in a Dell machine and has 4 pins. I tried to plug it into my new mobo which caters for 3 pin fans. I thought that it was just a PWM fan which are supposed to be backwards compatible with the 3 pin ones but it doesn't work.

Is this a case of Dell being awkward? Can anyone offer any advice on a quick fix?

just hook figure out which pins are for voltage and hook them up and ignore the other 4... It should be able to just plug in, did you plug it in right (there's 4 different ways you could have done it if you tried hard enough, of the two more obvious ones one should work right)? You're sure the fan header on the new mobo works?
