My Toshiba A85-S107 laptop supports up to 1.25 GB of memory. I have installed a 1 GB module in the only free slot to complement the 256 MB built-in to the machine. If I were to replace the 256 MB module with another 1 GB module, would the system recognize that 2 GB are installed, although this exceeds the 1.25 GB "limit"?

Yes, but I suspect that the limit is there because it is not possible to actually change the 256MB.

The photo on the last page of this link shows how to remove it. Couldn't I replace it with a module of a different capacity?
