my friend is in bad need of a hard drive and i dont want to suggest one that will not work. So what type of hard drive will work with that board?? (asus p4p800se) and if possible choose help me choose one for him from NCIX.com
Maverick, I have a ASUS P4P800, and I have two Seagate Barracudas (250GB 7200rpm SATA), which have been running in my PC without a single problem for over three years. I don't know anything about NCIX, but there's a similar Seagate drive here.
The only BIOS change I recall is setting Enhanced Mode Support (P-ATA + S-ATA) in the IDE Configuration window (in BIOS) after installing both drives.
One thing I did discover is that on the MB the SATA plugs are numbered; SATA 1 and SATA 2. I discovered this when one of the drives did not appear in My Computer and I had to get in the case with a flashlight and a magnifying glass. The printing is very small but right next to each SATA plug on the board. I realized this was sort of like the IDE equivalent of Master and Slave, so I hooked my main drive up to SATA 1 and the second drive to SATA 2 and everything was peachy.
Make sure you enable S.M.A.R.T. for both drives if you want to utilize that feature. I find it comes in handy sometimes. You need at least Windows XP with SP1 for SATAs to work.
In my manual there is a detailed section on installing SATA drives. If you don't have a manual for that board you can download the PDF version off the ASUS site.
