I'm looking to identify and buy a good heatsink for an Athlon XP 3200+. The issue I'm having is that Socket A parts aren't being carried by retailers anymore, and buying online always carries the risk that it's not right for me -- especially with some of the less conventional designs that tend to be good for heat dissipation. The Zalman CNPS for example will not fit on my board. Some possible candidates I've looked at are:
Thermalright SLK 900
Thermaltake Volcano 12
Thermaltake Big Typhoon
Gigabyte 3D Rocket
Vantec Aeroflow 2
The other issue with buying these things online is that the only thing I can go by are reviews, and they tend to go across the board -- I really don't know what to expect in comparing these products against each other. I'm hoping maybe some people here have some experience or recommendations for different products.
The reason I want to replace my current hsf is that it can't keep my cpu cool. It shuts down during games, stress testing, etc. The temp gets uncomfortably high (60+) during the summer, or if the heat is on during winter, even when idle. I'm currently using an AMD-recommended stock-quality hsf. While it might be true that any decent hsf will give some amount of improvement, I would prefer to see more dramatic results since I need to get temps down just to stay in operating range (i.e. without shutting down). Above that I would like a good margin to make sure I get consistent and error-free operation.
