I bought a 8800 gtx on ebay and it ended up getting shorted out. Do you think it would be possible to buy the same one (or a different make and swap the cooling system) from a best buy, compusa, etc. and return it for a refund (minus a possible restocking fee)? I just hate to be out a whole card, which was never OCed. Any thoughts?

Yeah, my thought is that this is dishonest.

well that is the price you pay for ebay usage, I would never buy off of it (though I would sell)

Yeah, you really play with fire buying a card like that on ebay. I bought my ATI x700 Pro AGP on ebay because it was $90 and I couldn't find one anywhere else. It was guarenteed not DOA, its not a really powerful card with as much risk of failing, and if it does fail, I'm only out $90.

Buying a $500+ card on ebay takes guts, you can try to have the card RMA'd but it probably won't work without a receipt for the original purchase I wouldn't think.

Well, ive upgraded my system for the last couple of years from ebay and havent had any problems. It worked fine for a little while.

Have you tried submitting it for warranty repair to the manufacturer, using your ebay or paypal bill as a reciept?

I have already called them and asked about it. Ebay reciept isnt going to work.

What kinda crappy manufacturer asks for a receipt? Last few times Ive RMA'd video cards its been by serial/model number and if it asked for a seller, put "other" if it hadnt been registered yet, it was good to go.
Or you could do the buy from local and return the wrong thing, Heres one for dishonesty, buy a 8800 Ultra and return an old TNT2   prolly burn for that :sol:

caveat emptor ...

if you manage to scam the manufacturer for a replacement card you're a cheat and a leech, and you drive up the cost for everyone else

grow up

"if you manage to scam the manufacturer for a replacement card you're a cheat and a leech, and you drive up the cost for everyone else "

Is that right? If their card shorts out on me due some manufacturing defect, even though it is new in the box, and worked for a short while when I got it, that makes me a cheat and a leech? I fail to see the connection.

If its new and in the box, go online and fill out an RMA, dont say ebay, say other or local business, piece of cake, dont tell the manufacturer any more than they need to know. Get the RMA and get a new one for a replacement, its very simple, Usually on the inside of the box (the flap you open) it says "DO NOT RETURN TO STORE CALL 1-XXX-XXX-XXXX for RMA" What is so hard about that? or go to the MAnu's web site and file the RMA there! cake :D

LOL @ three0duster!!!
I actually have a TNT2 installed in my work PC!! You think I could RMA it for a 8800?? Why not, it's an NVIDIA for god's sake!! I thought consumer was above all!! Hand me over that 8800 you bastards!!

First off how long have you hard this card? There is a big difference of you using it for 6 months and it dieing & you just got it and it was DOA. Did you need to try to contact the Ebay seller?

IMO I think you are out of luck. I just dont trust ebay users enough. Try to file something with Ebay.
