Depends on the resolution you want to play at.

What resolution monitor do you have/are getting?

8800's are currently the performance kings

The new cards will be faster than the current cards, but their drivers will be brand new and full of bugs. You're better off IMO buying an 8800 card.

if you're into games i would go 24" to get 1600x1200 or 1920x1200
and a good card 8800gtx to match
there's always new cards coming so its up to you to wait or not but its hard to say how they will perform compared to todays cards ie they may be loud or run hot or have driver issue's.

1680x1050? An 8800 GTS is the way to go, or an X2900 PRO if you can find one.

If you want extra high levels of AA/AF and a bit more longevity, a GTX is another good option.
