My Mom is planning on buying a new XPS Dell Computer and is trying to decide on which processor to go with. Her choices are a Q6600 or for an additional $135 a E6700.

This computer is going to be used for basically photo editing, websurfing, email and stuff.

Which would you choose?

Is $135 of the E6700 worth the performance increase?

HELL NO!!! the Q6600 and the E6850 Cost the same. And even than
The Q6600 Usually performs better than the QX6800 and any other Dual Cores.
Why pay more for something less? She'd have 4 Cores working under her thumb.

Ill agree go with the Q6600... what i dont understand is how the QX6800 doesnt perform better than the Q6600 or how the E6850 in single core application could do any worse than it either. Thats a bit of a large blanket you have thrown YO_KID37, with no explaination.

That's very strange pricing. Q6600 is cheaper than E6700??

BTW, just checked newegg,
E6700 $320,
E6750 $200,
Q6600 $280

How come E6700 is so expensive? Anything special on that CPU?

It has more to do with the fact that this was the processor of choice for OC'ers. They figure why lower it if it is still in demand.

Often Intel does not drop the price of model CPUs when new better ones are released. There are lots of reasons they still sell despite the fact they are older. Example - Dell sells a bunch of systems with Mobos that do not support the 1333FSB. A User's CPU goes, he wants to upgrade, etc.. etc.. etc..., the newer better E6750 is not an option and needs to but the old model and is forced to pay a premium. Intel is not making more of these (Most likely) so there is no rush to sell them so long as they eventually sell at a decent price.

Then there are always those who are simply uninformed and dont check somplace like here. "Hey, This CPU costs more so it MUST be better :>".

I don't know how old you are, or your experience level, but you should build it yourself if you feel up to the challenge. That way you can OC to 3G very easily. If you are interested let me know. I built three with really good equipment and might be able to beat the price for the junk Dell is selling.

Every benchmark i went too in that link still sees the QX6800 beating the Q6600 (as i expected) and as i also noted that in some applications of an E6850 this would also beat the Q6600 (which is shown is some of the gaming benchmarks) so i fail too see how this link proves your point, that
The Q6600 Usually performs better than the QX6800

Q6600 will be MUCH better for photo editing. You might want to convince her to have you build one for her. You can OC these q6600s VERY FAR! Mine's Prime95 stable @ 3.825ghz on water. That'll destroy any stock q6850.

Q6600 FTW.

If she MUST have a dell (I just vomited a bit in my mouth), get the q6600. I doubt you can tell a difference from 266 mhz. As well, you'll benefit from the extra 2 cores in the future.

a Q6600 is better in the long run and will be taken advantage soon enough

the prices you see on the Q6600 and the E6X50s reflect there options

the reason say a E6700 is More money is becuase there is more support for it and dont require a Motherboard upgrade and works better with current DDR2-800 ram were E6X50 knocks down RAM to 667 for channel support unless you go to OC it and most dont anyway.

Most people Just got within the last year a total upgrade and why would you go to a CPU with almost no support and almost no differance as Toms has shows between 1066 vs 1333 and also there have been issues with Motherboard with the new FSB.

You can buy dell if you want to pay the 20% markup.
Some may argue that it is not that high but I will remind them that Dell skimps on components to make up for it and keep their margins.

If you are not confident enough to build yourself, or trust Dell enough (warranty) to pay the 20% or so markup then all the power to you.

BTW q6600.
