I have an 80gig HDD which by the looks has failed...

will not boot on its own & when connected to a working PC, it more often than not reports that the HDD is not formatted

any quick (& easy) methods of recovering personal data ??
(i do have data recovery software i could use but the end result the last time i tried to recover data on a different PC was underwhelming)

That doesn't sound good at all. Does it make any clicking or other unusual mechanical noises? If so, the less you try to use it before sending it to a professional data recovery service (if you need it), the better.
If it isn't making funny noises, it may still be mechanically sound. One possible solution is to find an identical drive (may need to use eBay) that still works, and transplant the controller board from it. Obviously, the board revision must be identical. YMMV; I've done this and completely recovered drives, and I've done it and gotten zilch.

No mechanical noises (yet)

The drive is at least 3 years old so i ebay would be most likely for the controller swap if at all...
