DVD drive slow down

Besides some crappy DRM, what can cause a DVD burner to go from 8x to 4x, assuming a good IDE cable. Have you guys had any luck fixing this problem, I am unable to find links and I would love to have more info.

I have a LiteOn 812s that used to burn 8x no problem, now anything faster than 4 and it does the underrun junk, and sometimes will re-start. The burner is not heavily used at all. Anything you think I can do to resurrect it ?

That looks like an older burner, good chance it's going south. You can replace it for $30, e.g., Samsung, LG, or Lite-On

What program are you using?

Doubtful it is a background program but you might try disabling everything that you don't need and see.

Most likely it is dying--- but it could be to much stuff clogging up your memory in the background
