Unable to format RAID 1 array

I am attempting first creation and use of a RAID 1 Mirror set with a Sabrent PE88 (http://www.sabrent.com/products/specs/SATA-PE88.htm) controller and two Seagate ST3200827AS drives. The Sabrent PE88 is installed in an "HP Dx5150 sff" running WinXP (x32).

I am unable to format the RAID-1 set. Using Windows Explorer to format the R: drive gives a "Windows was unable to complete the format" message. Using Computer Management, Disk Management gives "The format did not complete sucessfully" message. Using a cmd session to format gives :
  1. C:\Temp>format /fs:ntfs R:
  2. The type of the file system is RAW.
  3. The new file system is NTFS.
  4. WARNING, ALL DATA ON NON-REMOVABLE DISK DRIVE R: WILL BE LOST!
  5. Proceed with Format (Y/N)? y
  6. Verifying 190779M
  7. An unspecified error occurred.

There are no WinXP Event Log messages associated with the format attempts. The only error messages I see in the SATARAID5 utility logs follow. I think these errors only pertain to the SATARAID5 utility and don’t have anything to do with WinXP use of the SATARAID5 driver … but I include these errors here for information in case they are enlightening for someone more expert than I. BTW, the SATARAID5 utility seems to work fine and build the RAID set as expected.

Also make sure you have the most recent drives for the card loaded.
