Last night I came home after work and opened a beer. I placed the can ontop of the case. I thought as long as I didn't knock it over it wouldn't matter. How wrong I was. It foamed over and spilled through the usb port enclosure on the roof of my case. It dripped onto my 7800gt. The card died. I wanted to replace it with something just as good, but the only card for sale as an equivelant at the store was the 8800gts. I bought the 8800gts because I thought the 8600gts was slower, and I didn't want to come away with a slower pc. I now have the 8800gts in a computer built in 2005 with a 2.4ghz X2 and 1.5gb of 400mhz ram. I want to know whether this was a mistake or was a performance increase. I now have a large piece of plastic draped over my pc and it's going to stay there.

X2 2.4Ghz... that's around 4800+ right? With 1.5GB ram. I think you got your computer a VERY NICE performance boost (If that's an X2 4800+, then you've got nothing to worry, still a good CPU by today's gaming standards).

And I love the "Spilled Beer" excuse to justify the cost to yourself... REAL smooth :D might have to try that on myself when I feel like upgrading in a year or so...

lol accuse the beer. Haha, you might get some bottleneck but you know you can always upgrade to something better. The only problem is you will need to get a new mobo which is AMD2 or 775 for intel. Your choice... w/e makes you happy.

I'd offten thought about the 8800gts but I thought it was the same thing as 7800gt. I guess I got a boost, but I'm not happy that to run dx10 I'll need a new os. I waited around a computer store for over 6 hours to learn the card was dead, and then drove for another hour to find a shop with a cheap card. I wanted my pc to last me as long as possible, and I'm happy that the motherboard didn't get damaged or else the bill would have been huge and it would have taken hours of work. I wish I had chosen the 7200gt just because I don't game anymore. I guess I'll buy a new title in a couple of weeks..

Sounds like a great reason to get back into gaming! Give Bioshock a try, that game just might revive the old pleasure. Sorry bout your card but you'll probably be happy in the end, the 8800 is a great card and should last you a while.
