I am thinking to add 2 more GB of RAM to the existing 2 GB in a P35 or possibly X38 motherboard.

Do I have to get the exact same brand and model for the additional 2 GB?

Best if you can but you can run different brands or models if you have to. Agree with Maxiar, get the same timing.

If they don't match, which is best, you will need to make sure that you manually set you memory timings so that they are no faster than what the slower pair can handle.
