I was about to purchase the 8800 gts 320mb and saw the new guide declaring the 2900 pro as the best card since sliced bread. If you look at the vga charts, the 8800gts is ranked ahead of the 2900xt in almost everything. Are the charts not updated to account for the new driver performance increases? I guess what I'm saying is that I don't see any article on Tom's with a look at how the drivers have increased the performance of these ATI cards to the supposed "beyond 8800gts" performance. Where are the benchmarks? They reference them as though they exist somewhere on this site, but the VGA charts certainly don't make the 2900xt look good, and if the pro is merely the same as that when overclocked, I don't see how it's an amazing value unless these driver revisions have really added a ton of performance and Tom's hasn't covered that or updated their charts to reflect that.
I saw the foreign website benchmarks for a couple of games, but they seemed to show that the 8800gts was better at most games. Only if you overclock the 2900 pro is it slightly better, and at super-high resolutions.
I'm ready to buy, I just need some sort of article to clarify what the basis for the recommendation is. I mean, the first benchmark on the vga charts is battlefield 2142, and it shows the gts just destroying the 2900xt... Thanks for any info guys.

From what i read the 2900xt manages to be on the same level as the 8800gts 640mb and even defeat the 8800 gtx in some applications (with the new drivers). Thus the 2900 pro o/c'ed to 2900xt speed will be a better card then an 8800 gts 320.
I would think that the 2900 Pro is better than the 8800gts 320 at stock and be on level with the 640mb version or something like that. nvidia drivers are so ****. ATi knows what they are doing
Yeah... its been the running rant around the forums that THG hasnt updated there VGA charts. I too would go with a 2900pro over the 320GTS but I'm sure either way you go you will not be disappointed.
Sketchy is right. But that's when AA and AF is off. From what I know, the 2900XT performs better than a 8800GTS 640mb consistently, coming close to the 8800GTX. However when AA and AF is turned on, the 2900XT lags behind the 8800GTS. Forgot where I read that, will post it once I find it.

The performance difference between these cards is negligible. You can only really see the difference when comparing charts and stats. I'd go with the XT mainly because of the games bundled with it (Black Box), and the Cyberlink DVD editing software.
Honestly, who can see a difference between 44fps and 47fps?
Everything I've seen and read leads me to this opinion:
The 2900 Pro is a desperate attempt to loosen Nvidia's stranglehold on the sub $300 market. Nvidia has been cleaning up with the GTS 320; they're swimming in cash right now.
ATI is laying some serious cards on the table. The 2900 Pro would seem to be a great buy - if you can find them. They're going out of stock as quickly as they hit the market.
