So I'm getting a new Q6600 very soon as part of a new rig. I was originally just going with the stock cooler, seeing that I'm unlikely to overclock. My friend, however, tells me that I HAVE to buy a aftermarket cooler - like, its going to be THAT much better for me if I get one. So is it truly necessary for me to get a heatsink for my Q6600?

Oh and I'm going to do some intense gaming with it. (with a 8800GTS 512)


ps. If I should get a cooler, can anyone recommend me one? (I live in Hong Kong, so the market is pretty limited - mostly HK and TW brands, though we have an abundance of Coolermasters, so something from that brand would be good) (I reallly don't want to order online)

If you are not overclocking the stock HSF should be more than fine. You're friend is a muppet :)

Of course, if you want the proc to run cooler just for the sake of it, an aftermarket one is good. I am unsure what to suggest if you live in Honk Kong but if you can find anything from Thermalright or Zalman, i.e the 9700 they would be great. But like i said, if you ain't going to be overclocking, dont bother. A lot of it comes down to the airflow through your case and your ambient temps. Get Coretemp or speedfan and run the small FTTs on Prime95. With the stock HSF on my Q6600 I never saw above 45 degrees on full load.

I'm very confused at what you said there, lol.

I've heard that this one is very good at keeping the insides of the computer cool.

If I do some slight overclocking (like trying to raise the Q6600 to about 2.8 GHz) I'll probably need a cooler right? What good Coolermaster models are there?

If you're not overclocking, the stock coolers are perfectly fine. Albeit a PITA to install...

I have an Q6700 and was oable to get 3.1 ghz on stock. Now running @ 3.4 ghz stable and loving it.

Hope that helps some. I'm using a Tuniq Tower.
