7950 GT, Did I make a bad decision?

Last response: in Graphics & Displays

I've been slowly buying pieces for a new build. Well, I was in a Micro Center store today and they had marked down a PNY 7950 (512 MB) to $166.00. With the knowledge that I've got thirty days to return it, I decided to risk the purchase. My reading seems to indicate that the 7950 GT is a little bit better than the 1950 Pro and not as good at the 1950 XT. I'm looking for a quiet card that will let me play BioShock and Crysis at 1280 x 1024 with reasonable frame rates. Before I order the rest of the parts I need and open the box and risk a 15% restocking fee, I thought I would post here and get some opinions. I would like to stay below a 175 dollars and I need to finish my build before the middle of October (my current Pentium III desktop has been unreliable as of late). One option I have is to maybe buy a really cheap card now for work projects and later this year or early next to buy a better card for gaming.

Opinions please, Thanks

Tom

not an expert but have knowledge.. the 7950gt is a good card but not dx10 for crysis and bioshock so id go with a 2900pro or 8800gts for those games both will support bioshock but srysis has no benchmarks yet so hard to tell now... good luck on ur endevor

Are you saying save up and get it, cuz he said he needs to stay under $175.

The 7950GT is a capable that performs better that the mid-range DX10 cards. If you can live with DX9, then keep the card. If not, return it and get something like the $100 8600GT, 2600XT and then upgrade when the new stuff comes out (G92 whatever it ends up being and ATi's new stuff).

well 166 for a 7950gt is not a bad buy. it would probably play bioshock at 12*10. just dont expect it to keep the pace for too long though.

if you just want to hold on for a couple months then just get a cheaper card like a 7900gs or 7600gt or x1950pro, for the cards that are just around the corner(i d say around christmas or maybe sooner) will probably offer MUCH better value.

but if you want absolutely to play bioshock at these settings and you re an unconditional gamer, the 7950gt for 166 is not bad. for crysis i wouldnt really hope for too much.

I was gonna buy that card, I am still trying to decide, was it at the microcenter in madison heights MI, I didnt see the card on microcenters web page, so I assumed it was only at that store. Let me know how it works out, I want to buy that card or the 1950gt for the same reason(bioshock)

you d be better off with a x1950xt instead of a 7950gt if you can find one for the same price if you can live with a little more noise and heat and power. depends also on how long you want to have the card and what settings you want to play at and your budget. either card might not be the best buy for you.

Yes, it was at the Michigan store. But I only saw two more 7950 cards left on the shelf. Not saying there are not more in the back room, but you never know.

Thanks for all your replies. More opinions would be appreciatted.

Tom

looks good to me for the money

unsure about the prior posted that said you d be better off with a x1950xt instead of a 7950gt as clicking on vga charts the first benchmark that pops up these cards are almost identical.

you can always waste your money on second one - SLI is a pain - just sell it and upgrade to the 8800 thingy

It's a very good card for the money, you made a good choice in buying it, since X1950XTs have gone back up in price again. And it's the 512Mb version of the 7950GT, very nice buy there, Newegg had the 256Mb for a similar price to that until they sold out, so it looks like you got a deal!

I have a 7900GS and I can play every game out there except World In Conflict at really good settings, and even than World in Conflict looks beautiful. Keep the card, you'll have great graphics for right now, and than over the coarse fo time save up and buy an HD2900 based card, as those offer great DX10 support and are becoming cheaper and more readily available. Or an 8800 series card, but either way, KEEP THAT7950!!
