Hi,
I want to add 2 Raptors in RAID 0 for Virtual Machines to my current config:
Mobo = MSI Master2-Far 1st Generation (K8T model:MS-9130).
It supports:
- dual socket Opteron
--> has 2 x Opteron 248
- 4 IDE
--> all used
- 2 SATA (with on-board Raid VIA VT6420/VT8237).
--> all used already with 2x 36Gb Raptors in Raid 0 for O.S.
- has 4 PCI 2.2 32-bit / 33Mhz
- no PCIX and no PCIe
Questions:
- So, seems like my only choice is through PCI 33Mhz, right?
- Since Software Raid is(?) only accessible to O.S., it cannot work with VMs?
--> I have to go with Hardware Raid?
- any compatibility issues I should be aware of?
- What about <http://www.promise.com/product/product_detail_eng.asp?product_id=108>
- any other idea on the cheap side?
There was a company called NETCELL that made a PCI hardware based controller that "looked" like a normal disk drive. They went out of business... BUT you can still buy cards that use their IO processor from PNY.
It is bottlenecked because of the PCI... but it does work smoothly. And doesn't need drivers. I paid a LOT of money for mine... but you can get them for $30.00 now. (And 2x 34Gb raptors aren't actually limited by the bottleneck. Using 2x of the newer 150Gb raptors MIGHT be limited by the bottleneck. Using 4x of the older raptors... it might have been limited... but 1 of my drives went bad... so I can't tell you for sure anymore. I do know it was GREAT while it worked.)
