i just bought the HD 2900Pro. I had the opportunity to buy the 8800gts 320, but the Pro performs just as well, in some cases better, for less money. Newegg has them for 260 dollars. this is one of the only reviews i could find... http://www.tweaktown.com/reviews/1 [...] index.html

2900 wasn't as powerful when it was first released but driver updates made it about even in performance, but i think its now slightly faster than the 8800 (if the 8800 is 640 mb)
The only comparisons that I've seen are preliminary ones, and not the actual product that we'll all be buying. However from the looks of things the 2900Pro does look a little better than the 8800GTS 320mb version, although that might be because of the memory boost. I guess we'll have to wait it out a little more to really know.

From what I saw, the HD 2900 Pro beats the GTS under certain conditions, but when AA is enabled even though it doesn't become unplayable, it is very clear that the GTS gets the upperhand by quite a bit. This benchmark was shown to me by another poster in the New Build forums, but I was already under the idea that the Pro could only compete (And beat) with AA disabled.
Nowadays things depend a lot on the particular game. The only situation where the 8800GTS overtook the 2900Pro heavily was in Lost Planet running in DX10 land. Every other situation the 2900Pro held its own pretty nicely, usually slightly better. The main caveats with the 2900 is that it sucks about 25W more juice at peak (during games, and according to their particular test) and it's significantly louder (7 db). The AA thing is complicated because AA is not as important at higher resolutions, only at lower resolutions where these cards are overqualified.
I'm looking at Newegg right now and the cheapest 2900Pro is about $280. However, the 1GB model is 'only' $340, so if you think that VRAM overhead will pay off in the long run, that may be a good choice. Otherwise, the 8800GTS is basically the same price (with rebates), so close in performance most of the time that there's no clear winner.
it depends, since the 2900 pro's are Supposedly failed xt's then it will depend on the individual card HOWEVER, from what I know they usually manage to OC to 2900xt stock speeds
Sometimes you can do TOO much research but I had wondered about the selling prices I saw @ NewEgg. More newegg price hikes on popular or limited items? XbitLabs news article
