well i have an amd x2 processor in a geforce 6100m-m and i was thinking of getting a x1900 for it. is this a good choice, or should i get an nvidia graphics card instead? is there any difference when using an ati card in an nvidia type mobo?

You have a respectable AM2 CPU and 2GB of RAM. Can you get a mfgr & model number off the power supply? Or get the data off the side panel of the PSU? It should look something like this:

We are most interested in the +12V and any +12V MAX info.
Mfgr is FSP group Model is ATX-400PA

There is no problem using an ATI GPU in a Nvidia motherboard or Nvidia GPU in an ATI motherboard.
Do you have a budget in mind for the video card upgrade?

;edit
Also can you list your favorite games or the games you're thinking of getting? Some video cards handle certain games better than the other brand so that can make a difference.

The most important things would be the combined amperage on +12v rails. 18A+ would be the minimum. & the total wattage of the psu. 350W+ minimum.

Google "CPUZ" & post the mobo brand & model. It looks like it has onboard nvidia video. I assume you've disabled it, otherwise, there would be ati & nvidia drivers running. Your video card is X1300. Not for gaming. Does it answer your question? You're running an ati card on an nvidia board no problem.

Personally, I would get at least X1950PRO for DX9 games or 8600GTS for DX10 games. If you can afford it, HD2900PRO or 8800GTS320/640.

What's the monitor resolution?

you will not have an issue running an ati card on an nvidia mobo (no one would buy them if that was the case) the 2900 pro and 8800 gts 320 would not be bottlenecked AT ALL by your cpu and also I think they are better value for money, but an x1900 xt is still great for dx9

well i saw the sapphire 1900gt for 89.99 on newegg. is this a good deal? or should i save up my money for something else? i am also only interested in dx9 gaming. my budget is around 150$

90 bones for x1900gt is very good value. See the charts below. x1900gt is about the same as x1950pro which is $130+.
