Very odd ?
This KV-34HS510 FD Widescreen CRT Tube television cannot do 4:3
progressive scan images . The image on the screen when attempting to
do this is just visual noise.
For example, on a SONY Widescreen TV, by pressing the "Wide Mode"
button
on the remote there are four options:
WIDE ZOOM: 16:9
NORMAL: 4:3
FULL 16:9
ZOOM 16:9
If the originating media is in 4:3 format, the ideal setting
would be NORMAL.
The problem is for my television, this NORMAL setting doesn't work
if the originating 4:3 source is in progressive scan mode.
This hasn't been a problem in the past as in these cases where
I want to see a 4:3 source from a DVD in 4:3 format on the SONY TV, I
just change
the DVD player setting from Progressive scan to Interlaced and it
works
like a a charm.
However I now have a potentially unsolvable problem in that I bought a
DVI cable in order to generate images from my computer ATI video card
DVI port to my SONY TV DVI input in order to use my SONY HiDef
television as a pseudo flat screen computer monitor.
A PC video card generally generates images in 4:3 format.
The DVI cable from the PC video card to the SONY KV34HS510
works like a charm in in the 16:9 mode: WIDE ZOOM, FULL and ZOOM but
not in NORMAL 4:3. My ATI video card naturally generates images in
Progressive scan
not interlaced format so I get the same fuzzy image in 4:3 mode when
generating images from my PC to my TV. I'm a photo buff by the way
and I like to show digital photos from my PC to my TV just like 1960's
era slide shows I experienced as a kid. An S-video cable has
worked in the past but this is just 480i whereas the DVI cable allows
for more stunning images approaching 1080i (?)
Finally my question. Is there something wrong generally with this
particular SONY
KV34HS510 model in regards to progressive scan 4:3 or is it just my
particular TV that has this problem ?
Do I call a SONY technician to look at this TV or do I arrange with
SONY
to exchange this TV for an identical ( or similar) one that works in
Progressive scan 4:3 mode?
I LOVE this SONY KV34HS510 TV by the way in all other
regards except for this one glitch. I really want to get this TV
working properly with input from a DVI cable working in 4:3 mode
however.

I think I was wrestling with a similar problem today, with my 9550 card.
I was trying to play a DVD in the computer and get the computer to output
it as a 1080i signal to my Samsung TV. It does this just fine when the
output is ordinary computer video, though the TV "pillar-boxes" the 4:3
computer screen in a 16:9 window whereas I'd rather have it do full-
screen and change the aspect ratio in the TV (which I can do with the TV
remote). I'm going to mess with it a bit more. The clone and theater
modes just don't seem to want to do it. If I play the DVD in Nero
Showtime or other DVD-player client, the drivers seem to sense that I'm
playing a DVD and send it to the TV in 480p, which is all right, but I
can get that from either of my DVD players!
What I'm gunning for is 1080i full screen and set the aspect to 4:3 on
the TV side. I know this can work because I can force my satellite
receiver to do this with SD signals. I find that it's not all that good
for viewing TV, though, and the sat receiver tends to hiccup on its
Svideo port that I use for recording DVD's.

Except it's a bit of a compromise, since the TV must de-interlace. It's
nice to have choices.
Let me know if you learn any good tricks with the Catalyst Control
Center...

How are you connecting your DVD player to the TV? Svideo or composite? Be
aware, as far as I know svideo doesn't work with progressive scan-you need
to use component.

So you are saying that at one time it DID work? When did the problem start?
Did you change something in your setup?

Why are you trying to display a 4:3 PC resolution on a widescreen monitor?
Set the PC for a 16:9 ratio, I cannot see any reason to be displaying a 4:3
resolution. That way you will fill the whole screen and nothing will be
distorted.

While I could be wrong, I think maybe you just need to learn more about what
you are trying to do. By the way, Sony will have nothing to do with you
hooking up a PC to your monitor. It wasn't meant to be used as a PC monitor
and they just will not support it. Check out some of the web forums and a
utility called powerstrip for more info.
Also, does your TV have DRC mode? I use DRC mode to change my component
480i DVD player (xbox) to 480p.

I happen to own a Sony 34HS510 CRT HDTV...... for 1.5 years..
Still a very nice HDTV unit!!
I have both a QAM Cable tuner SA3250HD running in on DVI
and a Samsung T-451 OTA tuner running in on Component cables....
to the Sony 34HS510 CRT.
As for (Sony) Zooming on the 4 HDTV Set zoom options:
All 4 Zoom options work for both 480i and 480p on DVI Video Input...
Only the Full option works for 480i on the component Video Input
Port...
I did not test 480p on Component Cables In...

According to SONY Online Support:
1) SONY does not support PC to HD DVI TV connections and they
recommended that
I disconnect the TV from the PC immediately.
2) Since the KV-34HS510 has a 16:9 aspect ratio it will not support a
progressive
scan 4:3 source input.
So it appears the PC to HD TV DVI cable connection solution in this
case is to get the PC Video card to generate Interlaced video in
4:3 aspect ratio OR configure the PC Video card to use the 16:9
aspect ratio
with Progressive scan. Either situation should work.
As I said the PC 4:3 Progressive Scan to HD TV 16:9 Progressive Scan
using
a DVI cable worked superbly except for the cropped picture on the TV
which
is not ideal as digital photos are usually in 4:3 format.
