My primary IDE channel on my ASUS a7n8x Deluxe motherboard is dead and I plan on buying an SATA controller (probably this one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 816102062) and an SATA drive to go with it.
I have my backup image of the IDE drive on a USB drive and all I want to do is clone the original image to the new SATA drive that will be attached to the new controller. My question is, will I have to do anything different in order to boot from the controller mounted Sata drive, or will I just be able to install everything and clone the image?
I know that when you are installing windows xp it asks for the driver for the device, but what about when you are cloning the drive?
If the new controller can operate in an IDE emulation mode (sometimes called Legacy IDE mode), it should work fine. If the controller requires a driver, your Windows installation will not boot.
You could buy an IDE controller card and use your existing drive. Or you can temporarily put your old IDE drive and the new SATA controller and drive into a different machine and follow the "Switching Storage Controllers without Reinstalling Windows" procedure in the Hard Disk forum.
