Setting up RAID 5 through Windows XP... x64???

I found this article on Tom's about setting up RAID5 through Windows XP (natively). Very nice.

Then I went to do it, and was rudely reminded that XP Pro x64 is very different beast than XP Pro x32. And those hacks simply don't work with XP x64, since the lines that guide tell you to edit aren't in the files on the 64 bit XP. Effing MS.

Anyhoo, does anyone know how to setup software RAID 5 through XP (64 bit)? Either by hacking Windows, or through some piece of software, or whatever? (Short of installing Linux - I run a 64 bit AMD, and I'm waiting for Slackware support.)

I have a controller card, unfortunately, it's a cheap one, and only supports up to 5 drives in a RAID set, which does me no good, given that I have 10 drives I need to RAID together.

Of course, if anyone knows how to hack my controller card to do 10 drive RAID sets, that could be handy too, it's the one included with:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16816133001

I think it's a "NORCO-4618 PCI-X / PCI eSATA / SATA II / SATA I Controller Card"

Anyway, any help is appreciated, though I'd prefer an XP x64 hack over buying a new controller card.

  1. I was able to get Windows RAID-5 / Mirrored Volumes to work under Windows XP Pro x64 SP2:

    dmadmin.exe

    Before:
    00002A80: 73 65 72 76 65 72 6E 74 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 | servernt........

    After:
    00002A80: 73 65 72 76 65 72 6E 74 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 | winnt...........

    dmboot.sys

    Before:
    0004D340: 53 45 52 56 45 52 4E 54 00 CC CC CC CC CC CC CC | SERVERNT.ּּּּּּּ
    0004D350: 57 49 4E 4E 54 00 CC CC CC CC CC CC CC CC CC CC | WINNT.ּּּּּּּּּּ

    After:
    0004D340: 57 49 4E 4E 54 00 CC CC CC CC CC CC CC CC CC CC | WINNT.ּּּּּּּּּּ
    0004D350: 53 45 52 56 45 52 4E 54 00 CC CC CC CC CC CC CC | SERVERNT.ּּּּּּּ

    Note:
this patch will not modify the Disk Management GUI, you won't be able to create RAID-5 or mirrored volumes from within the XP x64 Disk Management GUI.

to create RAID-5 volumes, use diskpart (e.g. 'create volume raid disk=1,2,3')

to create mirrored volumes, use a patched Bart-PE CD (use the Tom's Hardware Article Instructions) (diskpart does not allow to create mirrored volume under XP x64)
