I'm getting a DVD for my HDTV and I'm having trouble deciding. Will getting
an upconverting player, like the samsung HD841 really be better than a
standard progressive player since the TV upconverts signals anyway? I've
heard yes and no.....any definite answers?
I'm looking for the best picture/sound possible for a DVD player and I don't
care about DVD-Audio/SACD or if it can hold 300 DVDs. I looking for
something that will give me the "closest to HD" picture as possible. If
possible, I'd also like to keep it around $200, more/less. Any suggestions?

That is correct. You just have to try whatever outputs are available to you
with your TV set and see which looks best.
With our older Panasonic E80, we got the best DVD picture by letting it send
480i 16:9 (it would do 480p) and let the TV set handle all the
upconversion. With our current Panasonic S97 DVD player, that will send
480i, 480p, 720p or 1080i, I believe I get the best picture sending 720p to
our TV set, which lets the DVD player do the upconversion. (Except that the
TV set converts that to 788p.) But if you have a good DVD player and/or a
good TV set upconverter, it can be hard to tell.
