I'm thinking that it's time for me to step up to DirectX 10. Wanted to get some expert opinions before doing so. I was thinking of getting this card:

What I need to know is, can my PSU handle it and will I experience any bottlenecks?

Youll be better off with a 320mb version... youll still see a huge performance increase , the 640mb is only better for higher res/ AA

Okay...I guess I should've explained that I'm probably going to get a new 24" Samsung Widescreen Monitor as well.

haha, then the 640mb will come in handy, and possibly worth the extra cash for a GTX if you can

Your cpu will most likely bottle neck, depending on the settings. Like if it was supreme commander or oblivion or something, your cpu will definitely bottle neck. If you're planning to play cpu intensive games, go upgrade...is what I'd say but I take it that that motherboard is 939 socket? Your better off building a brand new pc. I suggest you wait until early next year because that's when Intel and Amd has all their processors out.

Yeah, Evilonigiri, it's a socket 939. Overall, better off building a new system overall.

an 8800 320 or 640 would be great though if you don't want to build a new one

Well, I'm not a big SupCom guy, but I am anticipating the release of Starcraft 2, Far Cry 2, Crysis, Enemy Territory: Quake Wars, and Age of Conan. Yes, my San Diego is a 939. I can't believe that after only a year and a half its already time for a new build. Damn! This market is just unfair to the people. :fou:

I think perhaps if next year Intel and AMD's new processors will drop that this must mean new boards as well. I guess you are right. Maybe my 7800GT will hold me off a little longer and I'll just wait until then to build a whole new rig. Wonder what I can sell my current one for on E-Bay?

Your PSU can handle that card. Your CPU needs an upgrade to really use it properly.

You are better off building a new system. As far as being only 1.5 years since you built the system, it is important to keep up with the cycle of new technology.
To get the most out of your dollar, I usually stick by 4 general guidelines:
1 - Target for a new build every 3-4 years. This means, build a high-mid range build when you do build.
2 - Make only 1 component upgrade in those 3-4 years.
3 - Buy after a major round of price cuts for 2-3 components.
4 - Upgrade during Black Friday (Day After Thanksgiving) or some other ridiculous sale date.
Usually, you can get a good bang for your dollar and will only need to spend $1000-$1500 in those 4 years.

As for your old system, you can probably donate it to charity for a tax deduction or resell it on ebay... depending on the hassle you want to go to and the cost you want to recoup. Otherwise give it to a family member?

Okay, so then help me out. What are the new processors/motherboards that are on the horizon that I need to watch out for. I mean...are the quad core processors from intel no longer going to be the big thing (i.e. QX6800XT, etc.)??

I mean is Nahelam the next big thing? When is it coming out. This **** pisses me off...

P.S. Jys84...thanks for the tips...that makes sense.

Intel X38 chipset will be out in the next few weeks. Although there is little improvement over the current P35 (PCI-e2.0 and 16x speed on 2 pci-e slots and i believe support for 1600fsb)

Penryn is the next Intel release which is scheduled now at the 12th November. This is a size reduction to 45nm process, this is in the lead up to Nehalam out Q2 2008. Penryn should have slight increase in performance as well as better efficiency due to the 45nm. There are alot of current mainboards out there that support Penryn but none will support Nehalam until its release.

NVIDIA will be releasing G92 soon, which is also a core reduction to 65nm which is aimed at a mid house of 8600 and 8800... speculation to be named 8700. The big one is the G98 which i believe is Q2 2008 same as Nehalam.

AMD should have there new desktop part soon also after releasing there new server part, however, this shows little headway at intels chips. Display chips are in the works also with 2900Pro to be out soon which is also a mid-range card, to fight with "8700".

I think this covers most up and commers anyone else?
