If it displays the initial screen in base graphic mode then falls over when the higher end graphics takes over, it's very likely the graphics daughter board has failed. Is it still under warranty?

Before condemning it completely, download a Linux operating system that can run as a LiveCD and burn it to disk. That wil tell you whether it's a Windows thing or definitely a hardware issue. PCLinux OS is a good one from http://www.pclinuxos.com and ImgBurn is a good free burner of bootable CDs.

Guru out of ideas but suspects the answer lies in the StartUp repair facility on the Windows 7 DVD - or at least he hopes so. :D

Check your BIOS for the SATA mode... might be set to an incorrect value which will cause this every time. If it is IDE set it to AHCI and see what happens.

Brilliant - it wasn't graphics at all - it's the transfer from the MBR to the system on the disk.
