Nvidia G92 GPU launch brought forward
Printer friendly

Monica Chen, Taipei; Joseph Tsai, DIGITIMES [Tuesday 9 October 2007]

Nvidia is bringing forward the launch date of its upcoming GeForce 8800 GT (G92) GPU to October 29 from the original November 12, targeting AMD's new Radeon HD 2950PRO (RV670) as the major competitor, according to sources at graphics card makers.

With G92 and RV670 having a tight performance/price ratio, Nvidia's earlier launch should give the company an advantage in the market, noted the sources.

In addition to G92, Nvidia will also launch the G98 GPU to replace the GeForce 8600 series, however the launch date has not yet been set, added the sources.

Nvidia was invited to comment on this report, but did not respond by the time of publication.

Its just been speculation until now. Now its official. I guess it puts to rest any rumors of a 9xxx series this year.

OK, so when are we going to see a card faster than the 8800 GTX/Ultra? I am so confused right now...

It won't kill me if the 8800GTX I just got is not totally obsolete for a few more months.

I don't think it will be that long. Likely in the first half of next year (spring or summer).

:D :D True, same here.

Maybe they should take a break and figure out how to make cards at 45 nm before they cram more transistors in there.

I'm a little behind the times. What will the specs and prices for these cards be? Where will they fall in the nvidia spectrum for both performance and for price? I'm assuming that they will be "better" than any 8600XXX, but not as good as any 8800XXX on the market today. If that's the case, that's a big spectrum to fill up, so what prices will we see for these cards?

Huh?

No specs for any cards, just speculation.

64steam processors but much higher clocks for core and shader then the 8800gts's, which is what catches them up with them. Single slot cooler and 512mb of memory, although im sure a dual slot card will appear.

But aside from that none are confirmed.

the 2950 pro will be against 8800gt... then the possible 2950xt would make the 8800 gtx obsolete? at least at not uber high resolutions?

would be nice

It'd be nice for ATI to give the 8800GTX some competition and keep their competition either as quiet or quieter and as fast or faster than the GTX. We shall see, we shall indeed see.

The ATI dual card in 08 will destroy the ultra. Im very much doubting the 2950xt will beat the gtx, itll likely be aimed more at the gap between 8800gt and gtx, which is where the new 8800gts with extra shaders will position itself.

mmm Now I wonder if I should wait for the 8800GT 512mb, or just buy a 8800 GTS 320mb now, decisions decisions..

Since the 8800gts 320 are ceasing to be produced in favor of a higher spec 640 version, wait would be a good idea.

Wow, seriously? The 8800 GTS 320 is the most recommended card on this forum. They're nuts if they stop making it.

Reply to aevm

Well the 512mb new card supposedly competes extremly cloesly to it and will likely be a lot cheaper. The 640mb as it is is stopping too, but a new 640mb model 8800gts is being produced with more stream processors.

Reply to Hatman

I wonder if the 512 will actually be better then the 320 GTS, Seems like its in between the 256 and 512 since they are boosting up the 640mb.

Not necessarily, I think its more for price/performance, the GT comes quite close but is a lot cheaper. So now for that same money you get more GTS.

Atleast tahts the way I see it, so older models of teh GTS may indeed rocket down in prcie since the new GT outdoes them. Id love ot see how it oc's with a dual slot cooler or wc'ing with that new 65nm. Itll rock hehe.

yeah, if the 8800gt is meant to replace the 8800gts320 it should outperfom it aswell, it wouldn't make any sense otherwise..

Reply to Kari

I wonder if they always intended on releasing a GT since they left room for it by using GTS instead of the traditional GT/GTX

Maybe for the 640mb(I don't think they will end it considering they are updating it) Also if I don't see why they would give it a boost IF the 512 didn't come a little too close to it, perhaps even closer then the 320 came to the 640, just my 2 cents.

Because of how they compete. The GTS-320 is expensive to make, and it's likely got limited return at or below $200. The GF8800GT is a smaller chip selling at it's maximum value, and riding on a cheaper PCB, but unknown memory quality/cost.

Now the GTS-320 is somewhat memory limited, so the GF8800GT could beat it in situations where the memory size becomes a problem, especially because of the texture memory error, but at the same time the GTS-640 has to concern itself with competition from both the new HD2900 and the OLD HD2900, as well as the HD2950. For nVidia if it's not to much trouble to enable aditional SPUs on the GTSs, then it makes sense to start selling a GTS+ to combat the opposition, while giving it additional value breathing room from it's own product, which they are looking to launch at $250.

Removing the current stock of GTSs gives them a better value spread for their current lineup. Simply removing the GTS-320 would put some pressure on a continued GTS-640, especially if the G92 does its job for much less power useage as well. The other concern will be once the GF8800GT drops to $200, 2 in SLi would likely do very favourably against an old GTS-640.

And increased interest in SLI would boost sales of 680i motherboards, another good source of income for nVidia. Smart...

not even a tiny little 2950xt for 250$ to play at a quality that you wont see a really noticeable difference between ultra super high and super uper duber high?

cmon man it s not even out and you find the graphics not good enough for your taste? lol

8800gt in SLi sounds nice, but i cant afford the 680i/590.. i'll prolly end up with a 570/650.. the 8800gt sounds like a dream come true to me since the 8800gts320mb is out of my reach and the 8600gts is too expensive for its price

Reply to wh3resmycar

I wonder if this 8800gt will be DX10.1 capable?

Man, I just finally got my 8800GTS 320mb and now it's gonna be obsolete...

Even though I slightly agree with maverick but not to that extent...lol..

Overall not everyone wants to buy an 8800 GTX...It's been at the top long enough. Almost a full year now. We might get surprised with a new high end but most likely not anymore...Although I still hope it happens.

But yea...Most people who have waited really don't want to put 500-600 for a year old graphics card. Especially considering the 9800 should be coming first or second quarter of next year..that's if Nvidia doesn't make a surprise release this year (doubt it =(...)

I'm still hopeful though...They did bring forward the release of the new midrange...But hopefully they'll have another card released closer to Crysis' launch date...We'll just have to wait and see although it's unlikely.

The 8800GTX isn't that bad. ...not that bad at all. I'm seriously considering getting another for SLi, along with a respectable PSU. Hmmm...9800 next year...well, I might get hit by a truck next week, so I'm going to enjoy today.

Cheers.

hopefully you didnt take that seriously :P i even through in stars for that big long "what a bunch of bu11 ****... ******* *** ****** ****.... **** " line haha

That was definitely an exaggeration ( like when you see people saying tahtwaztehpwnz0rs... etc, they dont actually mean it they are just doing that on purpose) though i still want to see the 9 series out this year, and i also need to play on totally max ;)

As long as Crysis runs @ 1920x1200 with decent settings on my current rig. I'll not complain. ...but I'm damn well not going to spend $$$ for hardware upgrades to play it. ...its just a game.

Dude, these posts are crackin me up. I am with randomizer on this one. I have been delaying my upgrade for so long my system would probably crash if I started Crysis on ultra low settings. I am actually so far behind upgrading…it’s more like overhauling. The release of the G92 works out nice for me since I was planning on building a new system in the spring. I feel bad to those who cashed out back in the 7 series…solid cards but DX9 is toast.

I was actually a little shocked that PS3 came out at the end of DX9. Knowing the DX10 was around the corner, I honestly wasn’t too impressed. Even though programmers haven’t pushed the PS3 to its full potential yet, PC gaming with DX10 and holds far more promises. Hopefully PCIx 2.0 makes a difference too. My goal is to build a system to kill the PS3 and have it run new titles like Crysis on max. That should keep me set till the quad core GPUs come out :)
