i have 700 watt ps, asus mta-vm mobo, gskill 2GB, AMD 4400+ processor. i have everything plugged into correct spots processor, mobo, memory, and CD/DVD drive in.
when i plug ps in the mobo led light is on and i hit the power button everything turns on then in 5 seconds it turns off. what is wrong?
can you help me thanks
Sounds like your Power button is sticking. When you plug the PSU in, it provides standby power, which gives the red LED on the mobo. You press the button and the system powers up, but then the extended button press causes it to shut off again. As the angry rodent suggested, make sure your HSF is properly mounted, and its fan runs.

i plug it in then flick the switch on the back of the ps, the mobo led turns on, then i push the power button on the front, the fans turn on and the other leds on the case, then after 5 second everything shuts off, and the green led stays on.
Did you check the heat sink on the processor? Did you apply heat sink compound? Your processor could be over heating. How many memory sticks have you installed? Have you tried them in different slots?
remove everything from the motherboard except the CPU, one stick of RAM, and the power supply connections. Then use a pencil or something metallic to manually jumper the Power-On pins. It should power up and stay on indefinately, even with no monitor or drives connected.
If it still powers up for only 5 seconds, then you know it is not anything silly like a stuck button. In that case you're pretty well screwed. You'll have to try reseating the cpu and getting some different ram. and then of course a new mobo/cpu
But if it does stay on, then keep adding components until it no longer powers up correctly. Then you'll know which component is bad.
