Okay so building new gaming system, was going to go for the 8600GT but I had a look a Crysis recommended setup and it was a 8800GTS. I do game a lot and want a good card that will last me for a decent while but I don't play games on 1600x1200 or anything like that. I am usually fine with 1024x768 all/mostly High settings and some AA depending on game. Will the 8600GT be able to do this is most upcoming games or shall I opt for the 8800GTS?
Just incase wondering this is other system specs
Intel E6750
2GB Corsair XMS
Gigabyte GA-P35-S3L
Righto, hmm reckon a 500W PSU could run this system?
Depends on the PSU manufacturer. If you get a Corsair 450w, or Antec 550w NeoHE, either of which is more than enough power. Let me show a few links to look at concerning PSU's.
PSU - $49 shipped! Can power 8800gtx and an OC’d e6600! See link above for proof! Antec Earthwatt 380W P/Satx 12V v.2.2 80MM P/S2 Fan 80-Plus Certified - EA380

I currently have a system using a 500W PSU, I check yesterday but I can't remember the brand lol. If I tried this could there be any bad affects if it wasn't enough? If not then I can still get the 8800GTS while staying below my budget.
I am using a smartpower 2.0 500w.. please don't hurt me! Just got my 8800GTS last night, I play @ 1280x1024 (19" lcd), and everything on high, battlefield, quake wars, oblivion, all run great.

Didnt read the rest but what are ur specs?
This psu may/will be be a bit low. Possible issues.
-Cant provide enuf power so sys runs slower
-As the psu is loaded heavily efficiency decreases as does the life. If psu dies it can, and often does take other parts with it, starting with the mobo, gpu, ram, cpu...
Id get 600-650w. Doesnt have to be the BEST brand as long as its not no-name garbage either. Also make sure the watt rating is continous and not peak.
My sys can draw ~600w MAX (very rare in real life). My psu provides 650w cont with nearly 800w peak, this is safe enuf for me, but not for others.
Rather wait a week or a month is u have to for more ca$h
Dont risk it all for a $100 part.
Get EVGA because if you do not like your purchase or the model card you have you can use the step up program to upgrade for the difference of what you paid for example I had the 8800 GTS 320MB I paid the difference for the 8800 GTS 640. Get the 8800GTS 640 MB because
memory size matters and it will last you in the long run, and for PSU
get at least a 500watt PSU but the more the better. I have a 550watt
PSU.
