I am a little curious how the THG forum community are gaming these days.
Since less then 512Mb vram seems not enough for the future and more and more buy cheap and bigger screens, what are all here using when gaming?
Are most people future proofed or are we still using Pre "DX10" cards?

Feel free to post your current rig and tell us if you feel if its enough to play current games and how long you expect it to last. =)

Can only pick one option :kaola:

But I use a DX9 card: x1950 pro 256mb. And I play at different resolutions for every game.

I was gonna follow up with a part 2, asking how much vram and if you oc too, but i guess im gonna go back to just lurking...

I play at 1280x1024 myself.

Oh an my rig is not gonna last long if what everyone is saying Crysis is gonna be like.
Fine for now, lots of fps in games, obsolete after Crysis?

Read the minimum requirements. Youll be fine, maybe not maxxed out, but at 12 x10 just maybe, if the 320 vram doesnt do you in

19" WS not an option on your survey, so I picked Dx9, since I only have a x1800xt 256mb w/AMD 3200+. I would have better, but I have wife and 2 kids and lots of bills to pay :( Such is life...

Reply to lunyone

Yeah thats what im been hearing, but every benchies has shown the 320 performs well even at 1920x1200.(in some games)
That GRAW2 doesn't allow it to max detail is no biggie, it still looked awesome and flowed on my rig rest maxed out, but will the future games really punish all sub 512Mb cards out there?
I can't see the devs making the majority of gamers (people with 256Mb) fall behind, where's the smart marketing/money in that?
Thats why i wanted to see atleast what an enthusiast site like this use when they play and i would then guess that the gray mass would use something little below what we use here.

The recent article on THG showed pretty much you need atleast a GTX to play in DX10, so what about the rest of us should we buy the game anyway and watch slides? =)

Will be fun to see the marketing on these games if there is no new (cheaper?) cards that can handle them.
Im not spending $500 on a card barely managing the game...
What are the strategy/thoughts from the devs?

OK, firstly, most games are beta or ported/after the fact to DX10 ATM. And as for future/current games, the textures are going up, which usually is almost always redoable in games. As they go up, so will vram requirements. Youll still be good at 256/320 its just the max textures wont be playable in some games with that amount of vram

8800 GTS 320 overclocked to 650 GPU and 1850 GDDR3 displayed on an LG 19" LCD viewed from 5' at 10214 x 768 running Flight Simulator X SP1 (DX9). Although SP1 supports 4 Cores and FSX is primarily CPU bound, nVidia cards perform much better in this Simulator than ATI cards. See Tom's VGA Charts: http://www23.tomshardware.com/grap [...] &chart=290

Hope this helps,

7900GS at 1440x900. 99% of my 3D gaming is Guild Wars; a little UT will be thrown back into the mix when I re-install it. I still play a little Diablo II from time to time, and Sacred. Hoping for another good RPG to come out, but unwilling to pay subscription fees.

Try Titan Quest, it's the only thing that convinced me to abandon Diablo 2. Or download the Valhalla mod for Diablo 2, that's also a ton of fun.

Thanks, I'll check it out. If you haven't tried Sacred [Gold], that's another really good one. It isn't compatible with Vista though.

I could only vote for one thing, but I run widescreen at 1650x1080 using a 8800gtx and I would rather use dx10.

I meet the minimum requirements, yet I can barely play on low @1024x768 with no AA.

Why can't they come up with a new form of texture compression that means we can have higher res textures but not need more and more VRAM?
