Ok so I have a crossover cable and I've been trying to directly connect two computers so I can transfer some files from one to another but I can't get it to work. I've done google searches but I just can't find anything that enplanes how to setup such a connection. One computer is XP Pro and other XP Home can any one help explain how to do this o r point me to a good guide on how to do it?
You have to set the IPs and subnet mask on each machine so they are basically on the same network segment, otherwise, they won't talk.

First turn on file sharing for the folders you want to address on the target machine. Turn off Windows or other firewalls on both machines until the network is operational. Make a note of the target computer's name as displayed in Control Panel, System.
Follow the annoying Add A Network Place routine and after some shouting at the cat you may have a Windows network.
