I almost feel bad asking this question but I have to... Getting ready to upgrade my video card and as much as I would like to purchase a 8800GTX, I just cant justify spending another $150 over a GTS. I've heard rumors that a well overclocked GTS can match the performance on a GTX, is this true? I just dont know if I want to wait around for the next gen cards and since it doesnt look like there coming out this year I want to enjoy my games now.
My 7950GT just isnt cutting it at 1920x1200...
That's a fairly high resolution but the GTS 640 should handle it just fine. From what I've read the new cards from both companies should be arriving in November sometime so you might not have to wait too long. You could get a EVGA GTX or GTS and use the Stepup program when the new cards come out and if they don't then you still have a great card.
Yea it's a tough choice. I'm planning to build a new rig soon and don't want a 8800GTX...it's a year old now...just doesn't seem right dumping that much into a card that old.
I'd wait a little and see what the new cards coming out in november offer. Also if you plan to get a EVGA you can always step up 3 months down the road. Personally I think XFX's options are better. Double lifetime warranty. But what makes it really nice is the fact you can sell the product with the buyer holding onto that lifetime warranty. They just have to register it once they buy it from you. This makes it easier to sell older graphics card. You can pretty much nab a 8800 GTX and sell it a month or so before the new high ends roll out for around 50-150 below retail. You lose out on around 50-150...But you'll always be able to plop a high end gfx card into your rig. Really worth it. Better then the EVGA step up program...just requires more effort...Plus XFX offers a no hassle warranty on overclocking...So that's a great feeling as well.
An OC'd 8800GTS 640 MAY beat 8800gtx non OC'd in some few games , but 8800GTX still wins , because it has more memory , more bandwidth, more stream processors ..... definitely go for a GTX
Wait untill after the Crysis demo goes pub then buy what you need I bought a GTS and overclocked it but that docent mean it going to be good enough. Ill just have to wait until I can get the demo. BA
U dont need to justify a GTX to buy one
I went with a GTS and im happy i did. The price difference to a GTX was massive for what is essentially zero noticeable fps difference.
Also, AFAIK there are NO new cards coming out within the next 6 months that will rival/beat the gts/gtx.
With ur rez u will need a gts640, which aint cheap either, but will serve u fine.

Wrong , 8800GTX beats 8800GTS 640 in every game and in some games the difference is noticealbe, see it for yourself :
http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/v [...] undup.html
its only one of the reviews that proves my word
in some games the difference is even more than 50FPS
Amen to that brother gtx rocks
esp 1920x1200

It doesn't look as if there will be a rival to the 8800GTX this year.
However, there will be rivals to the 8800 GTS - ATI is bringing out the 2950XT / PRO next month in this price segment, and nVidia is releasing the midrange G92 later this month.
The GTX is a wildly good deal. I regret not getting it.
It is the cost of the PS3, and computer games have a massive glut of AAA titles that we have not seen in a LONG time.
Did you see the Crysis trailer where you saw his gun barrel pushing foliage out of the way??? If that doesn't convince you to go GTX...
I REGRET not getting it.

The G92 is going to be a fairly high-end card according to vr-zone
They say Reference cards have reportedly scored 10k in 3DMark06 even though that doesn't mean a whole lot.
http://www.vr-zone.com/?i=5309#Scene_1
It may not be a solid source, but atleast it's better than The Inc.
^ thats the INQ no INC
also if u see more new rumors aobut G92 , u will see they are refresh and wont replace the 8800GTX
I know it won't replace it, I was replying to ethel's statement that it would be midrange, I just forgot to remove the rest of the quote.
my 8800-640 run most all games at 60fps min, which is very good. 2142 sits railed at 100. get a 640 an oc it. I have run mine as high as 680/1800, too hot without water but i can run 550/1200 all the time on stock cooling.
enjoy

Yeah, that's the attitude alot of us have. At best you are looking $480 AR, which doesn't sit well for me either on a 1 year old card. We got spoiled getting one year old cutting edge performance out of sub $300 cards in the past.
But the fact remains, the 8800GTX is still, as of now, the card to have. If I gamed at 19x12 I would buy the 8800GTX for sure. I game at 1680x1050 and have come close to pulling the trigger on a GTX many times. I don't need it, but just want it for 16x10 max gaming. It just spanks the GTS with eye candy cranked. Although it is an outstanding card for the money, I'm just sorry I ever bought the 320MB GTS...should have just bought the GTX from the start seeing how prices haven't plunged much.

Change "deal" to "card" and that pretty much sums up my thoughts exactly.
I bought an 8800 GTX the day they came out and I don't regret it at all.

I bought an 8800GTX 1 month ago and I don't regret it at all.
i bought a 8800GTX about 2-3 months ago , and i am very happy with it
Come one mate, just don't go to McDonald's or that Restaurant once or twice for the next few weeks (no big deal eh) and with the extra $$$ get a GTX.
You will have NO post purchase dissonance!
If you can't justify buying an 8800GTX, why did you make a thread about it?
I just bought an 8800GTX OC. Will arrive here Wednesday. Do I regret forking out $500 for it? HELL NO! That thing owns in EVERY game. The OCed version I got actually, was cheaper than the other GTX's of comparable speed, by $50-$70, and it was faster. The Foxconn 8800GTX OC that I purchased has clocks on par with the GTX Ultra. Buyer's regret? Absolutely not.
EDIT: I compared the Foxconn ($499 w/ $30 Mail In Rebate) to the highest other clocked GTX, made my BFG, to an eVGA Ultra. Check it out...
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6814130090
The Foxconn has higher core clocks than the other two, and has the same memory clocks as the BFG, but the Ultra is slightly faster. But, here's the kicker...you save $80 - $130 going with the Foxconn. If that isn't justification for an 8800GTX than by God, I don't know what is.
justinmcg67 - SWEET!
And I have heard that Foxconn makes MBs and Videocards for all the tier 1 manufacturers anyway (BFG, eVga, Asus) so your card is not some inferior brand or something.
Don't forget to unlatch the PCI-e retention clip on your MB if you have one, it is really hard to see and even harder to remember it is there in your excitement in pulling out your old card to install the new one.
I can't wait till Crysis comes out, haven't been this excited since Doom 3!!! I still have the little pewter figurine on my monitor!!!
I have a question concerning the EVGA step up program - Will they consider the new cards to be a Upgrade persay or are you allowed to downgrade. Cant see them wanting to give money back and from what i have seen the consensus is that it will be a mid range card?
I have concidered giving advice about the upgrade program in this contect before but dont know if its eligable or not?
And yea i dont have one but on every benchmark etc i have seen from DX9-DX10 the GTX is all over a GTS sure you can get a superclocked one that comes close but do you want something that has the nuts tuned off it or a good quality stable card, If it was as simple as ocing a gts they wouldnt sell mant GTX cards now would they?
Mactronix
i have the 640 version the only reason why i didnt get the gtx is i thought a new one would come out... so im gonna use my stepup program for a gtx sometime in nov...

And it's all thanks to ATI for not having a competing product out that will push the prices down. Thank you ATI!

As for your question I don't know but let me say this about Step Up. Newegg has the Evga 8800GTX for $549.99 - $20MIR + $6.33s/h = $536.32 Evga has the same card for $599.99 + $14s/h + about another $14 or so to send your card to them which gives you a total of at least $627.99. This gives you a net loss of about $92 give or take as well as the loss of your video card for the time it is in transit so in most cases it is a better option to try and sell your card yourself.

Oops, that above is quoted from Falken699. Wasn't trying to rip you off bro.
yeah I watch Crysis vids instead of porn now.

Yeah, that was pretty ace that clip - just hope it doesn't need two of the buggers to run it at 1920x1200
