I almost feel bad asking this question but I have to... Getting ready to upgrade my video card and as much as I would like to purchase a 8800GTX, I just cant justify spending another $150 over a GTS. I've heard rumors that a well overclocked GTS can match the performance on a GTX, is this true? I just dont know if I want to wait around for the next gen cards and since it doesnt look like there coming out this year I want to enjoy my games now.

My 7950GT just isnt cutting it at 1920x1200...

That's a fairly high resolution but the GTS 640 should handle it just fine.  From what I've read the new cards from both companies should be arriving in November sometime so you might not have to wait too long.  You could get a EVGA GTX or GTS and use the Stepup program when the new cards come out and if they don't then you still have a great card.

Yea it's a tough choice. I'm planning to build a new rig soon and don't want a 8800GTX...it's a year old now...just doesn't seem right dumping that much into a card that old.

I'd wait a little and see what the new cards coming out in november offer.  Also if you plan to get a EVGA you can always step up 3 months down the road. Personally I think XFX's options are better. Double lifetime warranty. But what makes it really nice is the fact you can sell the product with the buyer holding onto that lifetime warranty. They just have to register it once they buy it from you. This makes it easier to sell older graphics card. You can pretty much nab a 8800 GTX and sell it a month or so before the new high ends roll out for around 50-150 below retail. You lose out on around 50-150...But you'll always be able to plop a high end gfx card into your rig. Really worth it. Better then the EVGA step up program...just requires more effort...Plus XFX offers a no hassle warranty on overclocking...So that's a great feeling as well.

An OC'd 8800GTS 640 MAY beat 8800gtx non OC'd in some few games , but 8800GTX still wins , because it has more memory , more bandwidth, more stream processors ..... definitely go for a GTX

U dont need to justify a GTX to buy one :p
I went with a GTS and im happy i did. The price difference to a GTX was massive for what is essentially zero noticeable fps difference.

Also, AFAIK there are NO new cards coming out within the next 6 months that will rival/beat the gts/gtx.

With ur rez u will need a gts640, which aint cheap either, but will serve u fine.

Wrong ,  8800GTX beats 8800GTS 640 in every game and in some games the difference is noticealbe, see it for yourself :

its only one of the reviews that proves my word

in some games the difference is even more than 50FPS

It doesn't look as if there will be a rival to the 8800GTX this year.

However, there will be rivals to the 8800 GTS - ATI is bringing out the 2950XT / PRO next month in this price segment, and nVidia is releasing the midrange G92 later this month.

The GTX is a wildly good deal. I regret not getting it.

It is the cost of the PS3, and computer games have a massive glut of AAA titles that we have not seen in a LONG time.

Did you see the Crysis trailer where you saw his gun barrel pushing foliage out of the way??? If that doesn't convince you to go GTX...

I REGRET not getting it.

The G92 is going to be a fairly high-end card according to vr-zone
They say Reference cards have reportedly scored 10k in 3DMark06 even though that doesn't mean a whole lot.

It may not be a solid source, but atleast it's better than The Inc.

I know it won't replace it, I was replying to ethel's statement that it would be midrange, I just forgot to remove the rest of the quote.

my 8800-640 run most all games at 60fps min, which is very good. 2142 sits railed at 100. get a 640 an oc it. I have run mine as high as 680/1800, too hot without water but i can run 550/1200 all the time on stock cooling.

enjoy

Yeah, that's the attitude alot of us have.  At best you are looking $480 AR, which doesn't sit well for me either on a 1 year old card.  We got spoiled getting one year old cutting edge performance out of sub $300 cards in the past.

But the fact remains, the 8800GTX is still, as of now, the card to have.  If I gamed at 19x12 I would buy the 8800GTX for sure.  I game at 1680x1050 and have come close to pulling the trigger on a GTX many times.  I don't need it, but just want it for 16x10 max gaming. It just spanks the GTS with eye candy cranked.  Although it is an outstanding card for the money, I'm just sorry I ever bought the 320MB GTS...should have just bought the GTX from the start seeing how prices haven't plunged much.

Change "deal" to "card" and that pretty much sums up my thoughts exactly.
