I have a problem with AMD crossfire. Currently, I am using both HD 5770 graphic cards.

Whenever I start my games like MW3, CS:GO, Diablo 3 and Starcraft 2, the screen went black and I can only hear the games running with sound. However, when I disable the crossfire mode, everything went back normal (playable w/o black screen)

While for normal internet surfing and photoshop editing with the enable of crossfire, there is no issue at all.

How can I resolve this issue? Below is my spec:

Processor:
Intel i7 860

Mainboard:
Asus P7P55D Deluxe

Graphics Card:
Asus ATI 5770 x 2

Memory:
Kingston DD3 1333 4x2GB

Storage Drive:
Seagate Sata 500GB

Power Supply:
Corair 620W

Operating System:
Windows 7 Home Premium 64bits

You should ensure that both cards work by them selves(remove one and run it for a bit and then try the other one). When you are in Windows using Photoshop, I do not think you are placing any stress on the second card(it is just like running a single card).

You may very well have a defective card(thus testing each).

You also have to ensure you have the latest drivers and profiles for the card.

Hi, I want to setup 4x AMD HD7850 PowerColor on CrossfireX for mining/bitcoin using the following configuration
Intel Pentium E5200 2.5GHz
4GB DDR2
ASUS P5K-E/WiFi AP
Chieftec 760W APS
Windows 7 64-bit

So far, Windows recognized up to 3 cards, I'm stuck. With Windows 8.1 will I have some problems?
Thank you.

1. do NOT use crossfire for mining as it reduces performance.
2. Please try to set to "Universal PCI-E Slot" to compatible mode if it is not detecting right or is set to Fast, it will disable the X1 slot(it does not say what x1, but this would explain seeing only 3 cards). The manual seems to make no reference to what section, but I am sure you can find it.

Give this a try and see how it goes for you.

I have very difficult query.
I have ZOTAC 210 DDR3 1GB GRAPHIC CARD.
I am buying Radeon R7 250 which is 1GB DDR5.
My motherboard is SLI and Crossfirex.
Can i join DDR3 with DDR5?
If yes then how would be the performance.
Are there any chances of Hardware problem if they are not compatible?Risky?

If anyone has done this before practically then please email me.

My config-
ASUS M5A99FX PRO R2.0
4 GB DDR3 RAM
AOC 1080 2437FH MONITOR

You can NOT run those cards in SLI or crossfire. They are not even from the same company(AMD/Nvidia) let alone compatible in any way.

You can use both cards if you wanted to run more monitors than a single card will allow for, but that is about it.

I know. I have looked for an update even if it was from a slide show AMD ran or something.

Maybe they do not want people to know they can do this.

ok, maybe something will be released in the future that can support more than 4, that actually increases performance rather than have a bad cost/benefit ratio

As it stands, the cards and drivers have a limit of 4-way SLI/CF, and that is only achievable on some of the high end cards. Some are restricted to 2-way or 3-way.

With the way cards work now, latency issues would likely start to be a problem with that many cards, as the time from starting to render and displaying the image does not improve with multiple cards. And as you run into CPU bottlenecks, it increases that latency, though you do get more points of input, the time from starting a frame to being rendered gets worse as you add cards.

Perhaps in a distant future, GPU's will work together differently, and things will change, but current cards do not allow more than 4, and have more issues the more cards you add.

Actually yes... but it would only be applicable in a card that has DUAL GPU's on it... AMD 7990 for instance

That is a single gpu card so you can not run crossfire without another one.

To be honest the card is rather slow and not worth getting a second for crossfire.

You also have to have a crossfire ready board to use this feature.

Again, trying to crossfire entry level cards is not recommended since a single faster card will be better in every way.

Hello everyone
I have seen many people making mistakes about MultiGPU technology or have difficulties understanding; therefore,I decided to write a guide that helps you understand it better.
So,let's start!

What is SLI ?
NVIDIA SLI is a platform that allows you to scale graphics performance by combining multiple NVIDIA graphics solutions in a single system.

What is Nvidia Hybrid SLI?
From Hothardware.com :
NVIDIA's Hybrid SLI technology gives users the ability to pair an IGP, or mGPU (motherboard GPU), with a discreet graphics card, or cards, for two new modes of operation. NVIDIA calls these new modes Hybrid Power and GeForce Boost.
GeForce Boost does what its name suggests. By coupling the motherboard's integrated GPU with a discreet graphics card, the 3D rendering workload is shared between the two GPUs for a boost in performance. Currently, GeForce Boost is only supported by GeForce 8400 GS and 8500 GT discreet cards, as for the IGP, only the next-gen nForce 700a series of chipsets due to arrive this quarter will be supported initially.

What is CrossFire ?
CrossFire is a high-performance PC Gaming Platform technology that enables multiple ATI Radeon graphics cards and a CrossFire-ready motherboard in a single computer to increase graphics quality and performance.

What is CrossFireX(Quad CrossFire)?
From Techreport.com:
CrossFireX is, quite simply, an extension of the CrossFire dual-GPU feature to three and four GPUs.
Here's the chart from AMD's website regarding which cards can you use in crossfire, motherboard support and more.

What is AMD Hybrid CrossFire?
Hybrid CrossFire allows integrated graphics and low-end discrete graphics to be used in CrossFire mode.

Overall, both Hybrid CrossFire and Hybrid SLI are mainly for power savings and aren't a good solution for gaming and 3D performance(overall).

Can you use SLI on a CrossFire board or CrossFire on a SLI board ?
Well , in general , the answer is NO;however, there are some methods(like driver hacks) that allows you to do this.
Caution:There is no guarantee that this driver hacks work,so do it at your own risk!

With the release of Core "i" CPUs,Intel announced chipsets(P55,X58,Z68,etc.) that allow users to use CrossFire and SLI on the same motherbard.(However, still some of them only support either SLI or CrossFire)
But the newer chipsets like Z77,X79 etc. usually support both SLI and CrossFire. And it's safe the say the future models will be the same;supporting both SLI and CrossFire.

Do the cards have to be same model?
For "Most" Nvidia cards the answer is yes,but there are some exceptions too, such as pairing a GTS 250 with a 9800GTX+,which can only be done if both cards have the same amount of memory. (It's possible because GTS 250 is actually a re-badged 9800GTX+)
But again there are some cards like 9800GT and 8800GT which have the same specifications but in general you can't pair them in SLI.(Some users have reported that by flashing a 8800GT's BIOS to a 9800GT's BIOS,you can do it,but its risky and not recommended.)

But for AMD/ATI cards,It's different.
For older models like X1900 cards, you have to use the same/master card in order to run them in CrossFire mode.
But for HD 2xxx cards and up,there are no master cards so you simply can use 2(or more) (same)cards in Crossfire.

So the general answer is yes, with some exceptions. So it's recommended to use the same cards for best results.

You can find more information regarding matching cards in SLI/Crossfire at the end of this guide.

What about the memory? Can you use 7800GTX 256MB with it's 512MB version ?
For Nvidia cards, the general answer is no.
http://www.slizone.com/object/slizone_ask_mmm013.html
"Another misconception is that the GeForce 7800 GTX (256MB) graphics cards and the GeForce 78000 GTX 512 graphics cards can be paired together. Since these graphics cards use different GPUs, they unfortunately CAN'T be paired together. Always refer the Learn More or Build sections of SLIZone."
So,you generally can't pair a 7800GTX 256 with 7800GTX 512 or GTX 460 768MB with its 1GB version unless you use some 3rd party applications(which isn't recommended).
However,if you manage to run these cards in SLI,then the model, with higher amount of RAM,will reduce it's RAM to match the other card.

For ATI cards,it's different.
As an example, you can Crossfire HD 5870 2GB with it's 1GB version (but again the 2GB version lowers it's memory to 1GB)

So,generally,,it's recommended to use 2(or more than 2) identical cards with the same amount of memory.

What about brands ?
Brands don't matter,as long as they're the same card with the same memory/speeds.

What happens if the cards have different speed
For ATI cards;
One of the cards will raise/lower its clock speeds to reach the other card's speeds.
For Nvidia cards;
Well it "was" like ATI with older drivers, but with new drivers its quite different. If you use 2(or more) Nvidia cards with different clock speeds in SLI mode, none of them will change their clocks and they will perform at their default clock speed.

Again, that's why I usually recommend using the same cards in multiGPU modes.

A Very important note about bridges
It's been frequently asked whether to use 1 or 2 SLI/Crossfire bridges.
The answer is that it will work with 1 bridge without any problems but I recommend using both bridges because:
1_You will never lose either of these bridges.
2_Some users have reported a minimal(not noticeable) performance increase.

Do SLI or CrossFire always improve performance ?
Not always.
There are some games that don't benefit from either SLI or CrossFire or require a patch in order to fully utilize both cards.
For example,Flight simulator X doesn't benefit from either SLI or CrossFire;on the other hand,BattleField 4 benefits from this technologies. It depends on the game to be honest.
This link has some great comparisons between single and multiGPU configurations in numerous games

What are SLI and CrossFire certified Motherboards?
SLI certified motherboards:
http://www.slizone.com/object/slizone_build_mobo.html
CrossFire certified Motherboards:
http://ati.amd.com/technology/crossfire/buildyourown1.h...

Is the memory important??
No,your computer's RAM isn't at all related to the cards you are using, just make sure it's compatible with the motherboard and CPU.

What are the power requirements for SLI or CrossFire ?
For every configuration, the power requirement is different.
Nvidia cards:
http://www.slizone.com/object/slizone_build_psu.html
AMD/ATI cards:
http://sites.amd.com/us/game/products/certified/Pages/c...

There are some compatible models that aren't listed so always check with the manufacturers website at first.

Is it really necessary to use SLI or CrossFire ?
It all comes down to 2 factors:
1)The games that you play
2)The resolutions that you play at
As mentioned, there are some games that don't benefit from either SLI or Crossfire;also both SLI/Crossfire really shine when you play "at least on" 1080p,even on this resolution,a single powerful card can handle everything fine.

Is it better to get 2 mid-range cards or 1 high-end card?
It really depends on you.I "personally" prefer a single high-end card rather than 2 mid-range cards because usually, the single card produces less heat and has less power consumption but it may cost more too.
So it all comes down to personal preference and budget.

Do SLI or CrossFire double the memory ?
No.Adding another card with more memory doesn't double the overall memory of your cards.

Which is better , SLI or CrossFire ?
It again comes to personal preference and the games that you play.
There are some specific games that scale better under SLI and vice-versa.

A note about Motherboards
For 2-way SLI,motherboards either support CrossFire at dual x16,dual x8 or x16x4 speeds.
The first will give you the best performance.
Dual x8 is also good and performs on par with dual x16 in most games.
But x16x4 is kinda different.
On PCI-E 1.0 boards/cards,there is a huge difference between x16x4 and dual x16(and 8x).
On PCI-E 2.0/3,0 boards/cards;however,the performance gap isn't as high.(The performance is notable in some games though, especially on high resolutions)
Generally, recommend dual x16 or dual x8 for MultiGPU setups.

Here is a good article which compares CrossFire performance between dual x16,dual x8 and x16x4

Both cards will load the exact same data into memory so they can both access the meshes, textures and other resources locally(would not be ideal for the cards to share these resources over the pci-e bus or other interconnects).

For this reason cards do NOT gain memory in SLI/Crossfire.

AMD has not made any official data of this type available yet, but so far cards with the same core have been successfully used in crossfire.

I do not think an extra bridge is needed(no performance gain). It does not seem to hurt anything(lots of people do it), but is generally used when you get more than 2 cards.

You can always give it a go, but do not expect to gain performance.

Actually, if we wanted to be technical, SLI was developed by 3DFX for their voodoo cards back in the 1990s, and NVidia acquired the rights to 3DFX and the technology for SLI with it.

I have 3way Crossfire (R9 290s) in my set-up, and i have a question.

When i go into the Control Panel to turn on Crossfire, it gives me 3 options, 3 GPU (some numbers), 2 GPU (some numbers), and then 2 GPU again (with some more numbers).

Whats the difference between these options?

Can you post a screen of your options.

With 3 card you are going to want to use all 3 GPUs to get the best performance.

I hope you have a beast of a system to feed 3 cards :)

Underneath the 2 buttons for enabling and disabling Crossfire, their is a drop down box that has the 3 options i mentioned before.

3 GPUs (0 6 12)
2 GPUs (0 12)
2 GPUs (0 6)

Perhaps it has to do with how the frames are rendered? The thing is, i cant find any official documentation on this anywhere. Seems weird.

Yes, my system is just fine :)  Plus it has 7680x1440p to push, so its not lazing around either lol

I pair the GPUs with a 4930K and 1866 Memory on the ASUS Rampage IV X79 board. I bought the cards almost on day 1 of their release, so theyre all custom cooled with the arctic coolers that were very popular for a bit.

I do not see any official documentation and see users just wondering about it as well.

I may be worth shooting an email off to AMD about this one.

With 3 GPU's you should have best performance. and with that resolution to push, it is good to have all that power.

Hi there,

I would like to crossfire 2 x R9 280X's - The mb I would like to use is Maximus VII Hero. The AGP ports run @ 8x in duel mode. Will this be sufficient to take advantage of the cards or am I better off trying to find a board that will run 2 x 16x AGP ports? This limits my options a bit as you pay a fair bit more and I like the Hero.. is it necessary? Many Thanks!

You are fine at 8x. That is the same as PCIE 2.0 x16. Which makes good use of those cards. You should be fine.

Can I crossfire a Tahiti XT with a Tahiti XTL? (HD 7970 with a new R9 280X)

Please check to ensure you have the latest bios for the board. Sometimes you may need the secure boot option off for some cards as well.

It is best to create your own thread for this type of issue.

I am not 100% sure you can crossfire those cards. They seem to have different cores.

Radeon R7 260X = Bonaire with 128-bit memory controller.
Radeon R7 265 = Pitcairn with a 256-bit memory controller.

Even if it worked, it would be like crossfiring a 5770 with a 5870. You may get it to work, but may perform worse than a single card.

I would Contact AMD to be 100% sure those cards can work together in crossfire.

I crossfired my r9 280x vapor x with my new xfx black r9 280x but i dont get any fps gains more than 10 more than single card in battlefield 4
Tried dissabling ulps
I dont know how to resolve this issue

What is the actual frame rate. if you went from 50 to 60 that would sound like Vsync.

Your system specs look more than enough for anything.

Please ensure that the latest drivers are in use and even try the beta ones since they tend to get crossfire profile optimizations first.

I would fine it extremely unlikely that you have a system bottleneck with the cpu or gpus.
September 6, 2014 3:01:01 PM

It would be strange if anything bottlenecks as these are high end gpus and one of the best cpu
My frame rate was 55 avg and now its 70 avg

For the sake of completeness can you please try some other games or benchmarks.

You may get more help making a thread about his actual problem because I am not sure how many users are active in this thread.
