Your question

Is there something wrong with my 8800 GTS?

I've compared my benchmarks with other users with almost identical pc setup as me but our details vary greatly.

For example: Under 1280*1024 resolution playing Team Fortress 2 on maxed out settings for everything.

My friend gets 120 fps +
I get 80-110 fps.

I've noticed that my fps for CS: Source seems lower than when I first bought this card.
I have the newest drivers. I haven't overclocked anything.

Also, when I am viewing a website, as I drag down the page, I can see a white shadow of the text trail behind when scrolling down. The same happens to any backgrounds such as grey. As I am scrolling down, it seems to change colour.

Thanks for any comments on this.

What are his specs? Source engine still relies more on CPU even though they made it a little more GPU

Out of curiousity, what is your PSU? not enough power and your vid could be throttled back, though I think it's supposed to give you a warning that it's going to do that.

620 W corsair. Also remember I have that weird ghosting issue with text

I get a white ghost on letters while scrolling too, never noticed it before today, must have been there all along. Probably the LCD and not the video card. How bad is the ghosting? You may just be worrying over nothing.

Run 3d mark and compare your scores to others with same system. What you have given us is a little vague to go on.
October 14, 2007 10:28:31 PM

for some reason when i double click the 3dmarks install .exe nothign comes up.

the ghosting is pretty bad because as i am scrolling, boxes change colors
October 15, 2007 12:37:14 AM

my 3dmarks06 score was 7959
October 15, 2007 1:21:06 AM

What vid card?

and SOMETHING is bottlenecking for that CPU/memory/mobo setup. I think it is your GPU.

I get at least 11,000 in 3dmark06 at the same res.
10,000 when not in SLI.
October 15, 2007 1:24:06 AM

I didnt even give you my stats. Here they are:
CPU: Intel c2d e6750
Mobo: Gigabyte P35 - DS3R
Ram: 2GB OCZ 4-4-4-12
Vid: evga 320mb 8800 gts

3dmarks06 im talking about here
October 15, 2007 2:27:25 AM

Sounds a little off.
My sys (see below) will get ~12,000 in 3d mark with a decent OC.

Try the usuals:
Driver uninstall (use a driver remove program)
Format (if u can be bothered)
Also (if u can) swap cards with ur friend. If he gets less fps, its the card, if not, could be one of the above or h/ware like psu/mobo... etc
October 15, 2007 2:33:17 AM

Lol, well hes more of an efriend xD.

I just formatted. I got well over 140 fps before the format.

I installed forceware and all my gigabyte chipset drivers. but i will reinstall drivers and see whats up. any other recommenations since I have already tried pretty much everything mrmez has said. thx for ur help btw =)

When's the last time you de-fragged your hard-drive?
That's the only advice I have other than doing all the basics, virus, spyware scans, disc clean-up, etc.
October 15, 2007 11:10:18 PM

i formatted 3 days ago

That's not the same thing as de-fragging.
I de-fragged a system for a gamer who had never done it and it took 3 days to finish.
October 15, 2007 11:50:57 PM

try overclocking your vid card with riva tunner. i have same gpu and i have it running @ 667/1051. i get 40's fps on crysis beta @ 1680x with af x16 and aa x4. my cpu is a e4300 running 3.4gigs tho
October 16, 2007 1:01:08 AM

i know its not the same but it is a rather strange step to take to fix the problem is all im trying to say. i will try it however

Now wait a minute in one of your earlyer posts you stated that your friend gets 120+ and you get 80-110 fps, then you said before you formated you got 140 fps. This means that you are getting more than your friend, so whats your problem again!?!
October 16, 2007 3:17:39 AM

Basically I achieved the same fps as my friend BEFORE the format. After the format, I couldn't.
October 16, 2007 3:33:26 AM

What exactly are you talking about? When ever you install a new program or game Windows installs them fraggmented and that slows things down. I defrag once every two weeks to keep things running smooth an fast. If you havent defragged at all after you Windows install you OS is fragmented, you need to defrag.
October 16, 2007 9:12:02 AM

The reason your not getting the scores is the same reason I did. I also have a evga 8800gts and the base number's of like 500/1700 all you have to so is raise your clock's to the next level of card. Try 574/1800 and you will go from 9thow to around 11500 or so. It is just where your number's are set. this deal had me going for a couple week's as I allways Overclock my cpu&ram but not my video card. I used ATI tool or reva runer what ever you want also raise your fan speed to 100% on 3Dand 2D and you will be all set. Ba

Try a different monitor to see if the problem is still there.

Agreed. The only thing that matters at the end of the day is frames per second.
October 17, 2007 10:08:42 AM

What the hell are you talking about?? Ofcource 3DMark meens something!!! If I know that my system right now makes 8000 at 3Dmark and after I install something or switch drivers or whatever, I get 6000, then obviously something is wrong!! Yes, 3DMark isn't very reliable in comparing different systems with different video cards (they cheat with their drivers like NVidia did back in the FXdays) but for exactly the same system, it's a good bech.
October 17, 2007 10:44:12 AM

Dude, I've got the same problem too. My spec is e6420@2.13GHz, 2Gb DDR2 667 Team Value and xfx 8800gts. My 3dmark06 score is 8080. I donno what mobo i'm using since all i'm using acer, tho i'm using intel 946pl/gz chipset. I bump the core speed to 650MHz and memory clock to 1000MHz, got 8906.
October 17, 2007 12:48:47 PM

There are several factors that will efect your 3DM06 score with defragging being one of them.
1. What drivers are you using?
2. Is CPU throttling enabled in BIOS?
3. How many processes do you have running in the background while benching with 3D06?
4. Are you sure the settings for your RAM and CPU are what the chips are running at (download CPUz from www.cpuid.com and check your speeds on RAM and CPU)?

Make sure 3D06 is set at defaults, defrage your HDD and ensure you have the latest drivers for the 8800GTS. If you have a lot of background stuf running then turn it all off after a fresh reboot. Some scores for caomparison:

Dual Core, slightly overclocked with 8800GTS overclocked:
- With and E6600 at 3600MHz and an 8800GTS 640MB at 660/997 3D)6 score was 11,588.
Quad Core:
- With a Q6600 clocked at 3905MHz and an XFX 8800GTS 640MB clocked at 660/997 3D06 was 13,010.
- With a Q6600 @ 3915MHz, 8800GTX at 688/1100 3D06 score was 15,060 on 3D06.

The 8800 GTX scores around 12k-14k depending on OC and the HD 2900XT scores a lot more and which graphics card wins at the end of the day? If you said the 8800 GTX then your right in both DX9 & DX10. Thing that can affect your score (1) G-card drivers (2) OC'ing (3) luck of the draw (4) system config.

Theres too many reasons why one person gets more than the other to make any real comparison. Thats why I care less about 3Dmark scores, I do however care about one benchmark frames per second. Which one of these benchmarks do you think is the best way of finding out what your system can really do?
October 17, 2007 2:45:20 PM

I would say that it's a physical problem with your card. The easiest and most effective way to troubleshoot problems like this (especially when you have a mirrored system at your disposal-your friend's) is to just swap out his card for yours and see if your problem disappears. If everything else is the same, then you won't have to change a thing. I'm betting my left arm that it's the card itself and not any driver or software issue. Ghosting issues are almost always either a problem with A) your monitor being just barely forced out of frequency (where you are forcing a higher resolution/refresh rate than your monitor can take) or B) your card is fried. Usually the later. I hate to say that, but it's just been my experience that this is the case.
Driver issues usually don't result in ghosting issues like you are seeing. On the safe side, completely re-install your drivers and if it's still happening, then swap out your card with your friend's. If that clears it up, I don't think that I have to tell you it's the hardware.
October 17, 2007 4:37:23 PM

Hes an E-friend, I.E. Imaginary except for an omni-web-presence.

No swapping cards here.

Once you reformatted, you got good FPS, but after a few days, it returned to crap.

what did you do in those few days?
October 17, 2007 4:50:08 PM

I've put my 8800gts in my brother's pc (e6600, foxconn 45CM-S, 1gb ddr2 667 samsung) and got 8600 in 3dmark06 with everything stock. I think this is normal, maybe my mobo is the culprit here. Btw, I'm using raptoxx 450w psu.
October 17, 2007 5:05:33 PM

That PSU may not be enough. How many amps on the 12v rail(s)?
October 17, 2007 6:26:35 PM

Guys with quad-core CPUs: your 3DMark06 scores aren't good for comparison, even if you are using a GTS... your CPU alone is going to give you a sizable scoring advantage.

I would be looking at image quality settings, memory timings, driver versions... it's also possible your friend has overclocked his system, which would cause a difference...
October 17, 2007 9:06:25 PM

also for the OP- were you judging frame rates while in online servers? if so ping and the gameservers performance could have had an impact on perf.
good luck
October 17, 2007 9:08:16 PM

i tried on many servers. its the same result. I just got rid of my nvidia drivers and used eVGA's drivers (apparently they are in different versions). Performance slightly improved but my card can do way better than this becuase I have seen it do way better
