I think the requirement is for RAM in your main computer, not on your Video Card.

I've never heard of a game that requires 512Mb of Video RAM.
Nor do I think one exists now or one will exist in the near future.

At some near point they may run better with that amount of RAM, but certainly not required to play them.

games that require 512mb of v-memory are for ultra high settings for VERy large textures. quake 4 has a ultra high and requires 512mb of v-memory but with a 8800gts 320mb is capable of running it due to its high memory bandwidth. i tried quake 4 with my old 7900gs 256mb @ ultrahigh settings and it lagged like crazy. getting around 30-40fps(it was a v-modded 7900gs megaclocked).

I'm betting that the price won't drop much. If anything nVidia will drop the price to compete with the 2900pro. Allowing more people to buy the 8800gts 320 over the 2900pro. Just my opinion, not any real facts behind that statement.

Why don't they make this easier for us? There are so many things you have to take into account! this sux.

I am thinking about getting a EVGA 8600 and do the upgrade program and change it to the 8800 320mb, hopefully by then they would lower they price!
What do yo uthink?

8600gt isn't much of a gaming card. 8600gts is a bit better for gaming, but okay for gaming older titles. Prior to the 2900pro being released (not sure how much it is yet) I would've bought a x1950pro instead of a 8600gt/s. Not sure where the market is going right now, but there is nothing new with this (especially around the christmas season that will be upon us soon).
