If you had $300 to spend on memory what would you choose, 4GB of fast memory or 2GB of even faster memory? Assume the computer is used for standard business apps as well as gaming on Vista. My guess is with 4GB, but I am curious if someone could argue otherwise.

I would get 4 gigs of pc6400, which goes for about $160 (G.skill at newegg). Two 2 gig sticks will run more stable than 4 1 gig sticks. Just be sure your board is rated for 2 gigs in each slot.

it depends also in which version of windows vista you are running... you know what im saying???(64-bits can support up to 64 GB i think) and the maximum for the 32bit joint is not even 4 gigs

32-bit will support 4gb total address space, don't confuse that, 64-bit will support ~18 exabytes of address space

anyway, another vote for 4x1gb..

Well it seems we are all pretty much in agreement. I had been reading the articles about RAM on THG and I started to get curious about the difference. Thanks for your input and just for the record I bought 4x1GB sticks of crucial ballistix memory.
