How long to remove program on xp

Hello,
I tried to remove an old security program before installing new norton product. It said it had 44 seconds to go and stopped.The egg timer was still active but nothing seemed to happen. How long should it take? I ended up ending the program, Should i have been more patient?

If you have problem in uninstalling any programs, try with Revouninstaller (freeware)
