My Windows XP PC will no longer browse the web nor will it connect to my other windows 98 PC. I have had both PC's happily connecting to the web via my ADSL router and connecting to each other. bizarely my XP machine can still download & upload email from a pop3 server & I can ping websites. All that is changed is I have had trouble with my firewall (freedom) recently. I have tried all sorts of un-installing & re-installing my firewall but still no luck. Any ideas? Am I just being thick? Sounds like something obvious but I can't find it. Its not a virus either as I've done a full scan.
that makes no sense. What message do you get back when you try to ping the 98 machine? What is the address of the router and the other 2 boxes? What message do you get when you try to ping the router?
Deinstall the software firewall completely. You shouldn't need it anyway if the router has firewall facilities, (most do). When I first set up my network I could get out, but couldn't share folders or printers because the software firewall, (ZoneAlarm), was blocking the traffic.
Thankyou for your comments!!
I have had some degree of success in that I am now able to browse the web from my XP machine. As suggested I did this with a "kill -9" of my firewall (Freedom). But had to root out every last bit of it in the Registry. Still cannot browse the network though. When I try to ping each machine it just times out
