using ddr2 rams on ddr3 mobos (e.g. Asus P5E3)

Quick question: can i install DDR2 ram on motherboards designed to use DDR3 ram? i know that there are similar X38 and upcoming X48 chipset models that are/will be designed to use DDR2.
