Hi Guys

I am new to the forums but i have read a lot of topics in these forums and have seen you guys are very helpful. I also hope i am putting this in the correct section.

I need help with interface tracking on Cisco routers. I need a serial interface to track a fast ethernet interface.

My problem is my fast ethernet port went down due to a power issue but traffic was still coming through the serial interace targeted for the fastethernet interface. I need to track this interface so when it goes down it will shut down the serial interface so my other devices will know to route through the backup route.

I know this is not much information but im not sure what else to tell you. I don't have to much experience with cisco i only have 10 months experience and i don't know much about tracking interfaces. I would like to know is it possible to do this and if so could you please help me even if someone has any links to a web site that has the information. I have looked on google but im not sure if what i found is correct here is the link for the site i found http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/io [...] iptrk.html

Thanks.

Hi again

Just thought i would give a bit more information. What i have is 2 routers one with 2 serial connections and another with a serial and fast ethernet. On the first router i need to track the serial interface so when it goes down it will take down the other serial interface. On the second router i need to track the fast ethernet interface so when it goes down it will take the serial interface down.

I hope that explains things better.

Thanks.

Hi

I also forgot to mention i want to do this without using HSRP. I have another proprietary device that well divert traffic once it knows the serial link is down.

Thanks.

I'm not sure you can use interface tracking exclusive of HSRP. I think the two go together.

Hey

Thanks for the reply :)

I figured out eventually i couldn't do it that way but i think i might be able to make a script using tcl to get it to work. You wouldn't happen to no how to do that? Or even know any good links that could help me learn it?

You don't want your serial link to go down if your ethernet port goes down.

if you have another port going to the same destination its going to be possible to make it so that when/if one of the lines goes down it uses the other... since you just have one router it wouldn't be hsrp and i can't think off the top of my head exactly what it is called.

Hi

I dont have another connection on the router to the same destination. I just need to shutdown the serial interface when the other interface goes down without using HSRP. The other interface is using x25 not IP. I no it's not possible to do what i need without making a tcl script so im learning it now and hopefully ill be able to figure out how to create a script for wat i need.
