Hi Guys

1st of I have looked for a good guide to OC'ing, and found 1 but many ppl replied it had major errors, this i cant afford..

Basically I am a complete noob to OC'ing and want to improve performance a bit.

I have:

Asus striker extreme
e6700(soon to be e6850)
2 Gig corsair domiantor pc8500 (soon to be 4gig)
BFG 8800gtx OC2
Creative platinum s card
Vista ultimate 64bit

from info i read i think i am looking to OC the cpu and Ram- had a goal of 3.4ghz in mind

so if anyone can point out a good guide or would be willing to help me, I would be very happy :)

First, let me suggest that if you are going to only try to overclock to 3.4, that you buy the 6550 or 6750 and save some cash :) Both can hit 3.4 easily with a good cooler.

For the 6850, will you be water cooling? If only air, then honestly I don't see a reason to buy one. You can push the 6750 to 3.6 on air, and unless I'm doing something very wrong, that seems to be close to air cooling max. I fear the voltage it would take to hit 3.8 would push the temps over the safe range.

You might even be able to get the 6700 to 3.6, I can't say honestly, but maybe someone who's OC'd that chip can tell you better.

Each CPU will overclock differently across the same model, so just remember that trial and error are your friend. Remember that this could take up to a week to dial it in just right and stress it properly.

I just don't want to see you waste your money on a new CPU when yours is quite capable. Actually, in theory, the 6700 should clock higher easier due to the lower stock FSB. That should help keep the max FSB you need to hit 3.4/3.6 relatively low, which will keep your NB happy. A 6700 might run slightly hotter, and possibly require more voltage than a 6750, but I would think it was possible.

Just for reference, that same ~3.6GHz air cooling barrier will still be the same on a 6850, which is why I say if you MUST buy a new CPU, get the 6750 and save some money.
