can i delete windowos 8 from a new computer and install windows xp or earlioer version without losing files that I now have on the computer

What would you want to go XP or earlier on a brand new PC? you might run into driver issues and performance isn't going to be there.

The only way to not loose your files is if your drive is partitioned and you copy the files you don't want to loose to the other partition, or an external drive.

You can use a repartitoning software to shrink the Win8 partion and create a new partition out of the free space.

Then install XP onto the new partition.

Transfer your files from the Win8 partition to the XP partition from Win8.
Then boot up into XP and use the repartitioner again to delete the Win8 partition and then expand the XP partition to the full capacity of the drive.

And then you will have converted system back to XP.

Simple Right ?!!!!!!

FWIW

the xp won't intall on the new partition. if opened directly within 8, it won't proceed due to "compatibility issues' error. when rebooted with the xp installer on the drive, even with optical drive as priority, it bypasses it and proceeds to load win8. what to do?
