I am trying to install XP on an Asus P5K-VM with an IDE CD & HD on the same [only] IDE chain. The HD seems to only be recognized when it is the primary master, but unless the CD is master the installation doesnt work (after it says that setup is inspecting the configuration, the screen goes black and never lights back up (even though it appears to be getting a signal it is just a black one). How can I configure this to perform the install?

Thanks,
Jo

Mak sure you have the jumpers on the cd and hard disk set properly.
The hard drive needs to be on the end of the cable and jumpered as master.
The cd needs to be in the middle of the cable and jumpered as slave.

motherboard cd hard drive
slave master
Also the long end of the cable needs to be connected to the motherboard.

Thanks for the reply. It's working now but only after I swapped to another hard drive - I guess the one I was trying to install on was messed up since I can't get it to show up as a secondary on windows.
