Now that blu-ray drives are getting affordable, it is getting tempting to put one in the PC.  The concern I have is with compatibility with the various blu-ray standards.

Some early adopters of blu-ray stand-alone players have found their devices are not compliant with the latest blu-ray capabilities.  Is there any risk with this from a PC based player?  What is the compatability of current drives frimware and software drivers??  What upgrade paths are likely?? This sounds like a great new review topic for Toms!

My configuration is below.... I play Blue Ray and HD-DVD on my PC driving a 70 inch HDTV @ 1080P. Video Link to HDTV is DVI to HDMI. Audio link is optical going to my 7.1 Receiver. I run on Vista Ultimate-64...

Cyberlink is the software that plays HD_movies for PC. It comes with the Blue-Ray/HD-DVD drive when you purchase. The software is only stereo version so you need to upgrade to get 7.1 sound.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
RISK: It  requires some work to make it functional/operational. The Cyberlink that you will get in most cases will be OUTDATED or OBSOLETE with your HW. You have to go through Cyberlink on line support to get it updated...(About a week).

PC solution is more expensive than stand alone.

Its more difficult to enable Blue-Ray capability on PC than HD_DVD.  Sony-Columbia Pictures Blue-Ray movies(e.g. SPIDERMAN3) open times have issues running. You need your cyberlink software  updated to get it run without issues.

HD_DVD just run without much issue.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Advantage: It a lot better than standalone player... Its more flexible and can be upgraded through software. A stand alone player is pretty much it when you purchase it.

Most stand alone Blue Ray player have low frame rate 24 f/s

PC is great since you can pretty much do what you want.

This is not a new topic. A lot of guys/gals in this forum have made it work. There is a lot of information here that you can pick up.

Blue Ray prices has not gone down since HD_DVD phase out... A Sony stand alone player remains ~$350 range since Nov07.  There was a sale during the Dec07 Period but all prices remained after HD_DVD pull out of the market.
